5 minute Before & After pencil grasp transformation. ✏️ 🤚🏻 Sometimes all you need is to find the right verbal & tactile cue and voila! For our friend here giving him a cue at his forearm to relax on the table instead of up in the air resulted in improved stability at his wrist position and naturally switched his grasp to a more functional one!

School is right around the corner! We work with kids in your home, private school, or daycare and are currently working on our September OT session schedules. Don’t hesitate to reach out today!

Mealtime can often turn into an anxiety-ridden battleground of wills, when what we really want is a fun-filled opportunity to connect and reflect with our child. We want our children to eat all the food on their plates at every meal, and for plenty of good reasons: we don’t want food to go to waste; we want our little people to be well nourished; we associate ‘eating everything’ with good health; we worked hard to prepare the meals and want to feel like it was appreciated.

But believe it or not, using such a simple, common phrase like “finish your food!” can backfire. Pressure to eat can lead our children into an unhealthy relationship with food. Rather than follow their hunger cues, they may feel shame, guilt, or an obligation to eat, even if they’re not hungry.

So let’s practice replacing “Finish your food!” with language that supports our children’s emotional and physical health. Here are 6 phrases that support behavior modification in a loving, helpful way. (via https://gozen.com/6-standoff-ending-phrases-to-replace-finish-your-food/)

⭐️ 🙌 Happy Hands OT Tip:

Have your kids lay on their tummies propped on their elbows/forearms while coloring, reading, doing puzzles, during circle time at school, etc. Super easy and super beneficial!

Why? ...

• provides regulating input for the nervous system because when the neck is in extension in this position it activates the brain stem. Make sure they are NOT resting their chin on the floor or in their hands, they should be propped on the elbows using the shoulder girdle and back muscles to support the upper body and head/neck.

• facilitates shoulder stability and scapular strength which is important for fine motor development

• promotes ocular motor and visual motor development

• provides deep pressure sensory input to the full trunk and surface of the legs and forearms that are touching the floor

• remember “tummy time” as an infant? This continues to provide prone extension which is a very important developmental pattern, especially for sensory integration.

• facilitates some joint traction to the spine with the break from gravity in upright positions

👉🏼 If you’re having concerns about your child’s fine motor or visual motor development, contact us for a free phone consult to discuss your concerns together, learn about our mobile services, and see if an OT evaluation is warranted! www.happyhandsot.com or 614-822-1296
