Ohio Hands & Voices

Ohio Hands & Voices Dedicated to supporting families with children who are DHH without a bias around communication.

We began as a group of parents and professionals who were seeking change in the Deaf education system in Ohio. This group worked together to raise interest among family members, audiologists, speech therapists, teachers, early intervention specialists, and other professionals across the state. In 2009, we were honored to become an official chapter of Hands & Voices. Since that time we have continued to raise awareness for our cause while increasing our membership, creating family events and supporting parents state-wide. Today, Ohio Hands & Voices is a network of parents, family members and professionals with a strong commitment to the deaf and hard of hearing education community. We serve those who use American Sign Language, spoken English, total communication, cued speech, cochlear implants, hearing aids and/or no hearing technologies from Ohio (and the rest of the nation). Ohio Hands & Voices is a safe place to explore options, get unbiased support, learn from one another and share common experiences. We value diversity and honor the role of parents and family as the single greatest factor in raising a well-adjusted, successful child.

Scholarship Opportunity

Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH)

Topic for the 2025-2026 school year is: "The Moment I Realized I Belonged - My Definition of Community"

Who: The contest is open to young people through grade 12. Students must submit the results of an audiogram completed no longer than 24 months prior to the date of the contest by a qualified audiologist. Students must be certified to have an uncorrected hearing loss of 40 decibels or more, which must be supported by the audiogram in order to be eligible to compete.

This contest offers an opportunity for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to present their thoughts in the community, gaining skills, which can only come from signing or speaking to a large audience. Patterned after the Optimist Oratorical Contest, the Communication Contest For the Deaf and Hard of Hearing offers hearing impaired youth the chance to compete in speech or sign language.

The winner will receive a $3,500 scholarship for post-high school education/vocational training. The contest will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, in Columbus.

Contestants must prepare an original 4-5 minute presentation and may use sign language, spoken word or a combination of both to compete. Eligible contestants must have an uncorrected hearing loss of 40+ decibels. Contestants may not use visual aids or slides.
