The 31st Annual Secret Santa Program is well on its way. We are looking for volunteers who can adopt residents this Christmas to help fill needs. People often ask me why is this so important. Let me share with the "why". Su***de risk is a major challenge for adults with disability, for those who struggle with Schizophrenia about 25% will attempt to end their lives during the course of illness and 10% will be successful. When Christmas comes it brings up old memories of past holidays spent in jails, homeless centers and State Hospitals, often alone and with no one to care for them. They often come to this view that they are forgotten and their lives do not matter. What I know is this in the Bible in Mark Chapter 5 Jesus made a special trip to a place called Gadara - there he redeemed a man who was held in the tombs in chains and was very sick. What we learn from this story is Jesus teaches us to have compassion on those with mental illness and to redeem them as they belong. When a resident opens a Christmas gift that is wrapped, gifted by a complete stranger, a bell has been tolled that cannot be unrung, it rings clear and true that someone loves this person and has compassion on them. So during the course of the year when things get rough and they say to me "no one cares" I can point back to this total stranger (you) and ask them to explain this act of love and compassion as it contradicts this lie and false belief that no one cares. If you wish to get engaged, you can contact our Secret Santa Coordinator Ashley Turner at ashleyt@dayspringvillage.org or just call me at 904-845-2362. God Bless and have a Merry Christmas - PS: Donated Baked goods are also welcomed!
