Central Ohio Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program

Central Ohio Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program Protecting and empowering Ohioans in long-term care. Region 6 Ombudsman Program.

We advocate for residents’ rights, address care concerns, and educate families and residents about quality care, resident rights, and available services. Central Ohio's Regional Office of the State Long-term Care Ombudsman advocates for people receiving home care, assisted living and nursing home care. Paid and volunteer staff members work to resolve complaints about services, help people select a

provider and offer information about benefits and consumer rights. Our office advocates for consumers of long term care services and supports in Franklin, Union, Delaware, Licking, Madison, Fayette, Pickaway and Fairfield County.

May the 4th be with you… and with those who need a voice most. 🌟

This Star Wars Day, be a force for good in your community by volunteering with the Ombudsman Program. Just like the Jedi stand up for justice, ombudsman advocate for residents in long-term care, ensuring they’re heard, respected, and cared for.

No lightsaber required— just compassion and a willingness to make a difference. 💙

Are you a veteran in a nursing care facility with a service-connected disability? You may be eligible for additional benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)!

Many Ohio veterans receive Medicaid, but did you know that you could also qualify for VA healthcare, even if your military service was years ago? Since 2013, the Veterans on Medicaid program has been helping veterans access the benefits they've earned.

We’re here to help you navigate this process and get the most out of your benefits, including:
✅ Protect more of your VA pension or compensation
✅ Explore VA care options for you and your family
✅ Access benefits that meet your unique needs
✅ Transition to a VA care facility or VA-contracted nursing home, if eligible

How it works:

Ohio is home to five VA medical centers (Cleveland, Columbus, Chillicothe, Cincinnati, and Dayton), and these centers have partnerships with over 80 nursing facilities across the state to meet veterans’ long-term care needs.

If you qualify, the Ohio Department of Medicaid, through the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s Office, will notify you and advocate on your behalf, helping you connect with the VA and local county veterans service commissions. Once approved, you can transition to a VA facility or a VA-contracted nursing facility that best suits your needs.

Since 2013, veterans like you have successfully transitioned to VA care, including VA facilities, VA-contracted nursing homes, and Ohio Veterans Homes.

Under Section 3721.13 of the Ohio Revised Code, individuals living in nursing homes and assisted living communities have protected Resident Rights.

Today we’re highlighting Resident Right #12: the right to refuse, without jeopardizing access to appropriate medical care, to serve as a medical research subject. Every resident has the freedom to make informed choices about their participation and should never feel pressured to take part in research.

As Volunteer Appreciation Week comes to an end, we’re still celebrating the incredible impact our volunteers make all year long — not just this week! 🎉

Shoutout to our volunteer, Barry Lazarus, who was featured in the Southeast Messenger sharing what it’s like to serve with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Barry said, “I would tell someone who is interested in volunteering that while you don’t get paid money, you are paid in feel-good compensation.”

That kind of reward speaks for itself 💙

🔍 Did you know? The word Ombudsman comes from Swedish, meaning “representative,” and has roots in Old Norse — umboth (commission) + mathr (man).

Sweden was the first country to appoint an independent Ombudsman to investigate complaints against government officials, a powerful step toward accountability and justice.

Today, Ombudsman serve around the world — including here in the U.S. as trusted advocates for fairness, especially in long-term care.
