At Milestone Senior Living of Hillsboro, everyone in our care is like family. We know their stories, their hopes, and their dreams. This is what draws us together. Every month, we strive to make a dream come true for at least one resident in our community. Our Dare to Dream recipient for the month of January is Karen Buser!

Karen grew up on a farm with five siblings, where her love for animals—especially cats and dogs—truly began. Many of her favorite childhood memories involve the animals she helped care for, and that love has stayed with her throughout her life.
After facing some health challenges, Karen sadly had to rehome her beloved cat when she could no longer care for it on her own. Knowing how much she missed having a furry friend around, we planned a special surprise: a visit The Cat's Brew Cafe in Sun Prairie.
The Cat’s Brew is a cat café that partners with a local rescue to help cats find their forever homes. The rescue ensures every cat is vetted, microchipped, and healthy before they arrive at the café, where they stay until adopted. The rescue provides all the food and litter, while the café offers a welcoming space for guests and potential adopters to interact with the cats. Visitors pay by the hour to spend time in the cat room and can bring in any drinks from the café.
Since opening in 2023, The Cat’s Brew has helped 85 cats find loving homes—including three just last week! They can host up to nine cats at a time, and whenever one gets adopted, another rescue kitty moves in.
Karen had a wonderful time watching, playing with, and snuggling the cats while enjoying a hot cup of coffee. Before heading out, she was gifted a Cat’s Brew t-shirt, and we wrapped up the outing with a delicious lunch at Tipsy Cow!
It was a beautiful day filled with joy, comfort, and lots of purrs—exactly what Karen needed. 🐾❤️🐱

Residents took the opportunity to gain more knowledge about Japan and its culture by attending a session about gratitude stones. After choosing a stone to keep for themselves, and listening to the importance and meaning behind them, they were able to create their very own stones. Gratitude stones are “small, tangible objects—often decorated rocks or crystals—used as physical reminders to focus on thankfulness, promoting positivity and emotional well-being, and for personal mindfulness. In Japanese culture, they are conduits for spiritual reflection, a celebration of nature's artistry, and expressions of deep gratitude for the world's inherent beauty and spiritual presence.” Residents can place these stones around their apartment, the community, or simply keep them in their pocket to remind them of the things they should be truly grateful for.

Adventure Awaits in 2026! Each month we will “travel” to a different location on the globe to learn about the culture, traditions, food, and music that are specific to that area. Activities will be designed to promote the six dimensions of wellness. Stay tuned this month, as we have embarked on our first trip of the year which landed us in Japan! This week, residents have taken part in a trivia session about Japan while sipping warm green tea. They “climbed” Mt. Fuji and learned some interesting facts about the mountain as well as fell in love with the views the mountain gave. Today residents explored more about the culture and environment of Japan by painting Japanese cherry trees while listening to Asian music.

At Milestone Senior Living of Hillsboro, everyone in our care is like family. We know their stories, their hopes, and their dreams. This is what draws us together. Every month, we strive to make a dream come true for at least one resident in our community. Our Dare to Dream recipient for the month of December was Lillian Ratsch!

Lillian is a newer resident to our community that will be hitting a huge milestone this summer by turning 100 years old! She is a true reflection of the saying “age is just a number”, as she zips around the community daily when socializing with other residents. She enjoys people, which is why it isn’t surprising that throughout her retirement she would volunteer at church functions and St. Vincent de Paul’s Thrift Store in Mauston. Lillian can be the life of the party but also enjoys quietly sitting amongst table mates to listen and take part in wherever the conversations travel to each day. In some of those conversations the Green Bay Packers have been brought up and she chirps right in about her thoughts on Jordan Love as the starting quarterback, and how she has kept up with Aaron Rodgers’ career playing for the Steelers. She was all excited a few weeks ago when the Packers were going to play the Bears. She wanted to make sure she watched that game and had invited a few residents to watch it with her.
Last week we surprised Lillian with her very own Green Bay Packer party! Residents, family members, and staff joined her in cheering on her favorite team. After it was evident that the Pack wasn’t going to pull through, Lillian started cheering for Matt LaFleur every time they showed him on the TV, as many of the party goers agreed that he is pretty nice to look at. Though the Packers put on a poor show for us and it ended with a loss, we still enjoyed the snacks and comradery the day brought.

💙 Announcing Our December Employee of the Month: Tracie Prenkert 💙

Tracie has been part of the Milestone family since October 2022, and from day one, she has poured her heart and soul into everything she does. Working in a dual role as Administrative Assistant and Lead Resident Care Assistant, Tracie is the definition of dedication.
She is compassionate, selfless, and always willing to go the extra mile—often, putting the needs of our residents and staff before her own. Tracie is the person everyone knows they can count on, no matter the time of day or night. Her commitment is so strong, that she spends more time here with her Milestone family than her own.
Tracie spends countless hours here, making Milestone feel like home for everyone. Her kindness, reliability, and unwavering support make Milestone a better place for everyone. She is a major asset to our team, and we are so grateful for her commitment and care.
Thank you, Tracie, for your outstanding contributions and for being such an incredible part of our community. We’re lucky to have you! 💙

Today we had a very special visitor!
Lori Stanek, a dedicated volunteer with Custom Canines in Madison, stopped by with her adorable trainee, Denver. Custom Canines is an amazing organization that trains puppies to become service dogs for veterans and first responders.
Our residents were thrilled to meet Denver and couldn’t believe how calm and well-mannered he was! That’s all thanks to Lori, who has been caring for him since he was just 8 weeks old. Denver will stay with Lori for 18–24 months as he completes his training before being matched with his future owner.
Lori shared, “There is no better feeling than giving back to our veterans and first responders for everything they have done.”

Thank you, Lori and Denver, for brightening our day and for the incredible work you do! ❤️🐾

A beautiful tradition continues at Milestone! 🎶

The family of Annette Thorson joined us recently for a special afternoon of caroling. For years, Annette served our community as a visiting nurse for Juneau County and later as an RN at Pleasant Acres. Known for her "sweet tooth," Annette loved baking Christmas cookies with her children and hand-delivering them to her "family of patients" while caroling from house to house.

We are so honored that the Thorson clan continues to share that same joy and sweetness with our residents today. Thank you for keeping Annette’s legacy of care alive! 🎄🍪

These bags will sit near our entrance and can be picked up by our mail carriers, delivery people, and volunteers. Just a little thank you for all that you do for us here at Milestone!
