FIRST MOSQUITOES TEST POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS

According to Cyndy Howard, Environmental Health Director for the Montgomery County Health
Department, routine mosquito testing has identified mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile Virus. The first positive mosquito sample for 2025 was collected in Taylor Springs on June 30th. A subsequent positive mosquito sample was identified in Nokomis collected on July 3rd. Illinois Department of Public Health has already reported the first human case of West Nile Virus on June 24th.

This early West Nile Virus activity serves to remind us precautions should be taken to eliminate mosquito breeding areas and to protect ourselves from mosquito bites while outdoors.
Montgomery County Health Department encourages individuals to report potential breeding sites throughout the county so they may be investigated and treated if necessary. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, reports may be made to your local municipality hall. Otherwise potential breeding sites may be reported to the Montgomery County Health Department.

Limited supplies of Bti Briquettes are available from the health department for county residents to treat their own properties.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Only about two persons out of every ten who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness. Illness from West Nile disease normally occurs three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito and is usually mild and includes fever, headache and body aches. However, serious illness such as encephalitis and meningitis, with lingering complications and even death, are possible.

Persons older than 50 years of age have the highest risk of severe disease.

Montgomery County Health Department has been conducting an annual West Nile virus surveillance program since May that includes trapping adult mosquitoes and testing them for the West Nile virus. The health department is not collecting dead birds for 2025; however birds that have recently died from unknown causes can still be reported to the health department for monitoring purposes.

Persons who observe a sick or dead crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird may contact the health department at 217-532-2001.

Additional information about West Nile virus can be found on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website
