💛✨This week on the mat we explore the word ‘tapas’. You hear me say this often in class, this term is used in yoga philosophy to describe discipline. A solid, comforting rhythmic discipline. It’s not a forceful push but a predictable kindness you show yourself.

In YIN this week we practice the quiet willingness to stay. In our other classes we breathe through discomfort to appreciate our edge and find steadiness.

Tapas is about devotion to your SELF. We practice it when we show up when it would be easier not to.

Here is an affirmation to work with this week - “I am learning to show up for myself consistently, this is the highest form of self care.”

✨ There are some things the body can only receive in stillness…

Reflexology works with the nervous system in a deep, profound way. It may feel like a really good massage, this is just the surface. Underneath, at the level where your body begins to soften, unwind and finally feel safe is where the healing happens.

Reflexology at CENTRE is the kind of reset that feels like layers of YIN… stacked gently on top of each other.

Reflexology’s is where the holding patterns start to melt, where the breath deepens without effort
where your whole system exhales…from that place, something shifts.

Roll out your mat in the sunshine and take some deep fresh breaths or light some candles and get out your props and pillows, this sequence can be as spicy and flowy as you feel. Or perhaps you reach for a few poses to create your own YIN practice with long holds for 2-3 minutes before bed.

Begin with one hand on the heart, the other on the belly as you find finding an easy seat - sukhasana or virasana. Breathing deeply 4/4 your choice of nose or mouth on the exhale, remembering there is nothing to push or reach for in your practice, nothing to prove, simply meet yourself exactly where you are with kindness…

💛Cat/Cow - option to flip wrists
💛Clock circles - YIN and YANG both sides of the mat
💛Thread the Needle
💛Child’s Pose (with side stretch)

💛Puppy pose - option for support under forearm or elbows for depth and YIN
💛Low Lunge
💛Half Split
💛Pyramid, then step back to Down Dog then slow walk to forward fold then rise to Mountain
💛Bananasana both sides of the mat

💛Tree or seedling step back option for Warrior III before stepping back to Warrior II
💛Extended Side Angle, then slow transition to Wide Leg Forward Fold then pyramid then walk to top of mat and repeat on other side - start with tree onwards

💛Seated Forward Fold - option for swimming, tracking the moon in the thumb nail as you breathe deep
💛Reclined Figure 4 or Reclined Pigeon

💕✨Inspired by a conversation today at our studio…

As we near 12 months of teaching rhythmic, repetitive flow in community I am reflecting…

There is a moment in yoga that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable and hard and it’s not the strength work or the shapes, it is the stillness….the Savasana.

A long YIN hold, the quiet pause where there is nowhere to go, and suddenly all the noise enters! 🤪🙈

The thoughts, the restlessness, the urge to move, to fix, to leave, the desire to run…

So many of us are practiced in leaving ourselves. We learn it early on, often in the first 8 years of life is when the self betrayal begins. Now, it’s behavioural and normal, it’s distracting, pushing through and staying perhaps even glorifying busy… 🤯🙈

Why people find yoga so hard is that it asks something different

✨ Can you stay?
✨ Can you soften, even here?
✨ Can you be with yourself, just as you are?

This is the real practice, this is the yoga that follows you out of class into your relationships, career path and into your learning.

It is not about the perfect poses…

In class when it gets hard it’s because we practice staying, we are learning how to sit with the parts of us that feel uncomfortable.

With time we begin meeting them with compassion instead of escape…

✨✨✨So yogis, if stillness feels hard for you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means something within you is asking to be seen, to be held, to be nurtured…✨✨✨

This is why we return to our mat again and again, to build the capacity to stay. To learn to love the parts of us that want to run and then gently rewrite that pattern over time.

So friends, as we move into spring…into a season of more light, more energy, more “yang” the invitation is to stay grounded in your pace. No resist the need for urgency and to continue practicing in a way that helps you feel more connected not more depleted.

Pause for a moment, wherever you are press your big toes into the ground and spread out your other toes even if they are in your socks or in shoes.

Unclench your jaw, now soften your shoulders. Next soften your belly and on your next inhale place your tongue on the roof your mouth. Now as you exhale soften the tongue low, flat and wide on the floor of the mouth.

Now take 3 slow breaths…in and out of your nose.
Again, another 3 breaths… slower this time…and one more…

Now, notice what just shifted for you - physically, and emotionally, internally and externally…✨

This is your reminder - You don’t have to wait for class to come back to yourself. 🫁

New faces , familiar faces, people choosing themselves before the world wakes up and we’re noticing. 💛🧘‍♂️🧘💪🏻

This class has been asking to stay on the schedule…and we want that too!!

So keep showing up - for your body, your breath, your time, creating your peace.

🧘🧘‍♂️🫁Couldn’t make to your mat today, no worries here’s a breathwork reset practice for you.

Before the week carries you away, pause for a moment. Soften the muscles around your eyes as your read the screen and then take a slow breath in through your nose…and a long breath out through your mouth.

Again, inhale slowly, now an even slower exhale. Do 2 more the same.

Now imagine this -

You are sitting beside our quiet Hillsboro lake at dusk. The water is completely still. Every thought, every worry, every unfinished task you carried from the day…place it gently on a leaf.

Now as your fill your lungs with the deepest breath you’ve taken today, watch the leaf float across the water.

No chasing , no fixing, just letting the surface of the lake return to stillness.

One more deep breath in…the a long soft breath out.

The week doesn’t need you rushed, your life and your relationships need you steady.

Come back to your breath tonight, come back to yourself.

Remember your breath sets your pace, sets the rhythm and connection for your life, breath light, soft and deep 💛🫁🙌
