GMO Gene-Edited Bananas are Coming... Tropic, a United Kingdom-based biotech company, gene-edited the fruit so it never turns brown and is supposedly resistant to Panama disease. The company is promoting the GMO banana under the guise of reducing food waste. But it's really all about patents and profit. The banana was recently granted a non-genetically modified organism exemption by the Philippines Bureau of Plant Industry. The Philippines is a top producer and exporter of bananas. And since genome-editing is deregulated in the United States, our government will require absolutely nothing from the producers of these GMO bananas. No safety testing. No GMO labeling. In fact, because of deregulation, Tropic will be able to legally claim that its GMO bananas are non-GMO. How screwed up is that? It's bananas.
The only way to avoid these frankenbananas will be to buy certified organic, certified biodynamic, or Non-GMO Project Verified. The Non-GMO Project prohibits gene-editing under its certification standards.
