Hepatitis B vaccine at birth: The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend giving newborns a dose of hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth and so do we! The new CDC vaccine advisory committee has ignored a huge fact and science based body of studies proving this vaccine safe and effective. It's a nasty, deadly virus that can be present where you don't expect it and babies are extremely unprepared to fight it. Moms who screen negative can still pass it on to their newborns because the screening isn't perfect. Even casual contact with the blood of someone who is infected can cause infection. Casual contact can include sharing of washcloths, toothbrushes, or razors. The virus can also spread among team members, particularly for contact sports where exposure to blood is more common. People have also been occasionally known to get hepatitis B from contaminated tattooing and medical equipment. We still strongly recommend the hospital birth dose.
