The Hillsdale Volunteer Ambulance Service provides 100% free emergency medical response to Hillsdale residents and surrounding communities on a mutual aid basis 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our emergency calls can include: Cardiac arrests, strokes, automobile/motorcycle accidents, OB/GYN emergencies, allergic reactions, falls, diabetic emergencies, seizures, choking, high fever, flu, etc. We respond with unwavering resolve and we rapidly jump up to help our neighbors and protect the public – 24 hours per day/7 days per week, all as volunteers. We continue to be one of the busiest single ambulance agencies in the area with our call volume averaging 900 emergency requests in addition to countless standbys and special events! In 2020, we are celebrating our 66th year of service to Hillsdale and our surrounding Pascack Valley Community! Generations later, we’re still here looking out for all of our residents and visitors to the area alike. And as always, we have never billed a patient for our services. We DO NOT receive any Federal funding, so our volunteers can only continue to provide free pre-hospital care to you, your family and friends, and your neighbors because of your generous donations. We are an independent non-profit entity and, as such, we rely heavily on your support to fund our ambulance, equipment, training, and operating expenses. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to serving you and your families for years to come!

Hillsdale EMS was proud to participate in the Smith School Trunk or Treat! We loved giving out plenty of candy and letting the amazing trick of treaters check out the interior of the ambulance! Our crew remained available for service calls throughout the event which prevented us from going over the top with decorations!

Hillsdale EMS was dispatched at 03:48 this morning for reports of a structure fire with a party possibly trapped inside. While enroute our duty crew was informed that all residents were out of the structure. Due to the nature of the call, our EMS Chief also responded directly to the scene. Our duty crew established EMS Command and requested an additional BLS and an ALS unit to the scene. Upon arrival, there was a flashover leading to multiple firefighters needing to be evaluated. EMS Command requested 2 additional BLS and an additional ALS unit at that time.

Our crew triaged all personnel on scene and transferred care to incoming BLS units when they arrived. In total, 10 firefighters were treated and transported to area hospitals with support from the following agencies:
Westwood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Hackensack Meridian Health ALS, ALS Tour Chief & 3 BLS Units, Valley Health System ALS, Holy Name Hospital BLS and the Mass Casualty Response Unit from the EMS Task Force out of Englewood Hospital.

Our crew was released by fire command at 05:41 after operating on scene for just under 2 hours. Thank you to all EMS units and Fire Departments that responded and operated on scene this morning.

Our agency was proud to standby and participate in the “I Pink I Can” Breast Cancer Walk organized by the Hillsdale & Woodcliff Lake Police Departments. The community came out to support a great cause and raise over $7,000 for breast cancer research and support. Our ambulance followed the participants while 2 members of the crew walked the route. We also were accompanied by TriBoro Ambulance who was standing by to support the walk. Thank you to ShopRite for donating the space for the walk as well as refreshments for participants! Great job by all participants and by the police department host agencies!

A busy evening for Hillsdale EMS tonight! Starting the evening off, the department came out to support the promotion of the Hillsdale Police Department officers! We have cherished our relationship with the and look forward to continuing that relationship with the newly promoted leadership! Following the HPD ceremony, the ambulance and members of HVAS came out in strong force for the Emergency Services Open House, we were super happy to be able to meet with and interact with the community we serve. Concurrently the duty crew staffing the ambulance has been quite busy today with the per-diem day crew responding to one call, and the evening volunteer crew responding to 4 calls, two of which taking place during the open house.

Check out our September Call Data:

86 medical Dispatches handled by Bergen County PSOC. Our department answered 82 of the calls(95%). Our volunteers and per-diem staffing split the answered calls, each responding to 41 requests for service.

Our department responded to 23 calls for other agencies (28% of call volume for entire department)
- 14 were taken by Per Diem Staff for River Vale.
- 4 by volunteers for River Vale
- 5 by volunteers for Washington Township

Of the 4 missed calls for September, 2 happened while our per diem staff were on other calls for service, 1 while volunteers were on another call for service and 1 while volunteers did not have a crew. 2 of the 4 calls were taken by mutual aid volunteer crews and 2 by paid EMS crews from either Bergen County or local hospital BLS crews.

6 calls and a day-care school visit for our per-diem crew today! They completed 4 calls in Hillsdale and 2 in River Vale! Of the 6 calls, 2 patients refused transport, 3 went to Pascack Valley Hospital and the final call of the day resulted in a transport to Hackensack Meridian in Hackensack. In between the calls of the morning, our ambulance stopped by a day care in Westwood to support a planned fire safety demonstration since our members are both Firefighter/EMTs and one of our per-diem members has children in the class. Our crew ended up covering some basic fire and EMS safety for the class before departing for another emergency call! Our ambulance seemed to be on the move most of the day and it didn’t stop after the end of the shift since our volunteers are out on a medical of their own currently!

Ambulance 36 spotted on-scene this evening in Washington Township! Our Deputy Chief and Captain stepped up for extra time this weekend due to a projected shortage of available units in the area. The crew has so far responded to two medical calls this evening, both in Washington Township. During weeknights and weekends, our volunteers will provide mutual aid to adjacent jurisdictions when that town’s ambulance corps is out of service due being on another call or due to lack of staffing. Thank you River Vale Ambulance for covering 2 calls in Hillsdale during today’s daytime hours!

It was a busy weekend for our duty crews as they participated in some public events around town to ensure the safety of those in attendance! Both our Saturday crew and Sunday crew attended the Hillsdale Soccer Association Weekend Tournament at Centennial Field. Our Saturday crew also took the time to stop by the Joan’s Joy Child Safety Fest! Our crews also responded to various calls throughout the weekend ranging from medical emergencies to traumatic injuries.

This Sunday, some HVAS members proudly participated in the 24th Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K, honoring the heroes we lost on 9/11 by retracing the footsteps of Firefighter Stephen Siller, who gave his life in service. Ex-Chief Justin Eliopoulos, Ex-Vice President and Fundraising Chair Chloe Witt, and Cadet EMT Bella Zimmerman, alongside Hillsdale Police Sergeant Sayers, family, and friends, ran in unity to support this powerful cause.
HVAS will never forget their sacrifice — and we will always run in their honor.

Have you ever washed your car at 06:15 AM? Our per diems sometimes wash our ambulance at that time! This morning if you drove by you would have seen our per diems cleaning our ambulance before they rushed off to answer two back to back emergency calls in Hillsdale before 8 AM!

Please ask yourself these questions: What price would you put on a life? What is the value of the peace of mind that an ambulance will be ready to come to you in your time of need? While these questions may not have definitive answers, a full tank of gas to keep the ambulance running costs $160, a single pager for members to be alerted to calls costs us $500, life-saving EpiPens cost $600, and an oxygen tank to help patients continue to breathe costs $300. Donations in any amount are desperately needed and very much appreciated! Please consider a generous donation by visiting our secure website at www.hillsdaleamb.org and clicking the “Donate” button. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to serving you and your families for years to come!
