Makamae House

Makamae House Makamae House is an affordable independent living opportunity for seniors in our community.

A 10-bed residence that offers a private bed and bathroom for each tenant with several shared common areas, a large kitchen, meal prep and transportation. The design and philosophies of our home are largely informed by Dan Buettner’s research on “Blue Zones.” The Blue Zones are five places in the world where it has been recognized that people live the longest, healthiest lives. This longevity has been attributed to a variety of factors including diet, exercise, lifestyle, community engagement, and connection.

A few simple lifestyle changes may add many more happy years to your life.

It's "extremely likely" for people to live past 120 years old in this century, says a new study from University of Washington. That means someone alive today could make it past 120.

As we age, we may not always be able to remain in our familiar, physical home, but that doesn’t mean we have to leave behind the FEELING of home.

At Makamae House, we aim to create a new (or additional) home for our residents that can address their evolving needs and recreate the sense of community, security, and HOME that everyone needs.

This collection of gifts and letters demonstrates the outpouring of love and support that my own mother received from her group of friends or moai. This group is largely responsible for her excellent quality of life during her final years, despite being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. I extend my deepest gratitude to this community for all their support, and I know that my mother felt the same ❤

Family support and community connection are so important as we age, especially when dealing with changing physical or mental states, or in my mother's case, difficult diagnoses. At Makamae House, we aim to provide aging individuals with a community consisting of both staff and other residents that will support each other through joyful as well as challenging times.

Proponents of the Blue Zone diet recommend eating about two handfuls or 2 oz. of nuts per day. As for the type? It’s almonds in Ikaria and Sardinia, pistachios in Nicoya, and all varieties for the Adventists in Loma Linda.

At Makamae House diet and nutrition are integral components of our program. We integrate a variety of local and international foods exclusively prepared by a Blue Zone certified chef to make sure that our residents are receiving the highest quality (and most delicious!) food available in Hilo, Hawaii.

Ikigai. The word consists of “iki” meaning “to live” and “gai” meaning “reason.” This concept is another that is near and dear to us and very much in line with the a Blue Zone lifestyle. In particular, the idea that finding ones meaning and purpose can greatly contribute to longevity and overall contentment. It’s not too late to start living the life you want to lead.

Sure, the Blue Zone lifestyle promotes movement and exercise, but it also values connection and community. Maintaining close relationships with family and friends while continuing to build new ones contributes greatly to longevity and overall happiness as we age.

At Makamae House we aim to provide a warm and welcoming environment where seniors can live independently, but as part of a larger community of like-minded individuals who are interested in thriving and leading long, healthy lives.

As plans continue to unfold for the opening of Makamae House in early 2022, we are excited to connect with local universities and students who may serve as volunteers with us.

Intergenerational learning and exchange is so important in Hawaiian culture and is also in line with Blue Zone living principles.
