“In a world that tells you that you and your needs do not matter, where Black women are expected to suffer in silence, and where Black women are disproportionately dying at a higher rate from things like heart disease and maternal-related illnesses, self care is more essential than ever.”

Why you should say no to fenugreek…

Chances are as a breastfeeding mother, you’ve been told fenugreek can help with your milk supply. While fenugreek is one of the world’s most popular galactagouges, it does have adverse side effects and risk for both mom and baby.

According to LactMed, out of 85 women who took fenugreek, 45% reported having an adverse reaction. Some were a decrease in milk production, gassiness in baby, and a maple syrup smell from mother’s body.

Below are a few side effects that can happen to mom and baby:

Side effects for mom:
-It can decrease your milk supply
-Should not be taken in moms with diabetes or hypoglycemia
-It may worsen asthma symptoms
-It may lower the thyroid hormone T3
-It may cause gastrointestinal issues, loose stools/diarrhea, allergic reactions, & excretion of a maple syrup odor from the urine, sweat and possibly breastmilk

Side effects for baby:
-It may cause allergic reactions, gastrointestinal issues (colic, gas, reflux, upset stomach, diarrhea), maple syrup smell just like mom, & green, watery and/or frothy stools*

*Per “Thomas Hale PhD, Medications and Mothers Milk”. "The transfer of fenugreek into milk is unknown, but untoward effects have not been reported." Hale classifies it in Lactation Risk Category L3 (moderately safe).

If you have concerns about a low milk supply, please do not immediately run for supplements or cookies. Instead, contact a knowledgeable lactation consultant to discuss your breastfeeding challenges and goals. Also, just like with all supplements, talk to your doctor before you start taking any form of fenugreek even if your lactation consultant recommends it.

In my professional opinion and personal experience as a breastfeeding mother, I would steer clear of fenugreek. The benefits do not outweigh the risks.

Happy Month of the Military Child!

As a military spouse of 7 years with two kids, this month means a lot to me. My kids have had to say see you later too many times to their dad. He’s actually gone right now and hearing them ask for their dad breaks my heart. They are little troopers though. They see him on video and it’s like he’s here with us!

I know being without your spouse can be hard, especially with littles! I’m always here if you need a listening ear! 🩵
