Shockwave therapy is a treatment option I offer at my practice that I am very excited about.
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the body’s natural healing process.
Generally this treatment is not painful and any discomfort felt during treatment is gone after.
A single treatment usually takes between 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on the injury, a patient will usually receive three to five treatments over a period of several weeks.
When used in conjunction with other physical therapy treatments and exercises, it can be very effective in healing your injury.
Please reach out to me if you have been curious about this treatment option and want to know if it is right for you.

I went out on my own after working in clinics for years so I could deliver the highly individualized care that patients deserve. No aides, just me and you for the hour. Did you know that I offer a service called "Fall Prevention Training"?
Balance declines as we age and as a result the risk of falls increases. Fall prevention training involves progressive balance and proprioceptive work to improve stability and reaction time.
If you or a family member could benefit from this type of training session, reach out to me for a phone consult.

Recently I joined my friend Chris Dunn on his podcast. "Eat Half, Walk Double". Chris' podcast chronicles his four decades in endurance sports as an exercise physiologist, coach, race director, and athlete told through the stories of the important, influential, and interesting people he has met along the way.

I was excited to join him as we have been friends since nursery school.
Over the last 45+ years we’ve competed together in organized sports, shoulder to shoulder, as youths, adolescents, teenagers, and eventually as adults. In this episode we reminisce and story tell some of the most memorable moments including my experiences at some of the toughest endurance events in the world.

If you do listen, let me know what you think in the comments. And please subscribe to Chris' podcast if you like what you hear!

Congratulations to everyone who is running the Boston Marathon today!
It takes incredible determination and commitment to run this race.
Here are some thoughts around post marathon recovery:
-The first 7-10 days following your race is a critical time for your body to recover.
-Take it easy for several weeks and “listen” to your body.
-Stay active, but keep it to low intensity level exercise and preferably cross training and not running.
-If you have suffered an injury during the marathon you should seek the treatment of a Physical Therapist as soon as possible.

Testimonial Tuesday.
Word of mouth is so important for small businesses. I am so grateful to my supportive clients who share their experiences with others.

"Dwight Hartman was simply the best one-on-one physical therapist I could have ever worked with after my Achilles injury. He helped me to strengthen my injured foot and more importantly, helped me to get back to running. I couldn’t have come back from my injury as well and as confidently without his great and personalized services. I highly recommend Dwight for anything you are trying to overcome, and would not hesitate to go back to him in the future."

This post is for all the marathon runners out there! You are less than two weeks away from the race and have come so far in your training! The finish line is so close. Time to think ahead and book your physical therapy appointments.
Some of the more common injuries that occur after a marathon include strained muscles, tendinitis, muscle damage at the micro level (DOMS), sprains of various joints and compressive reactions to the cumulative pounding that occurs when the foot hits the ground thousands of times during training and running a marathon.
Plan now for your race recovery.
Comment if you will be running on Monday!

Dry Needling is a treatment technique designed to address painful Trigger Points. Trigger Points are defined as taut, hyper-irritable bands of muscle that cause pain both locally and referred and can limit a muscles strength and flexibility. Trigger Points often form in response to trauma, overuse, muscle imbalances and stress. Dry Needling utilizes a very thin, monofilament needle (think acupuncture needle) that is inserted into the trigger point in order to get the isolated band of muscle to release. This can restore normal blood flow and muscle function which results in a healthier and painfree muscle. Dry Needling is almost always a part of a larger treatment plan and is combined with other techniques to maximize outcomes.

Spring is here and that means people will start to become more active - and often more quickly than they should which leads to injuries.
If you haven't been very active all winter, start all your activities slowly and deliberately. Let the body adapt to the increase in movement over a period of days. Your muscles and joints will not cooperate if you jump in cold turkey to high intensity sports suddenly and for long periods. Your joints will get stiffer and so will your muscle—the perfect recipe for an injury. Make sure to thoroughly stretch before engaging in your activity/sport.
Some tips: Runners should alternate between walking and running Bikers avoid hills your first few times out Golfers avoid using your full swing right away Baseball players should gradually return to throwing Spring cleaning? Start light, your body will thank you!
