What is a DIEP flap?

A DIEP flap is an advanced tool in a plastic surgeon’s armamentarium that uses microsurgical technique to reconstruct a breast using your own fat, skin, and tissue. The lower abdominal fat and skin is taken on its blood supply while sparing your abdominal muscles and it is transferred to the chest where it is reattached to the blood supply in the chest.

It is a fantastic alternative to implant based surgery and provides a natural appearance and feel.

My daily coffee cup. Just a subtle reminder. This is the reason I do what I do for a living. But it doesn’t stop there. It continues with doing good for my 4 kids, for my husband, for my sisters, for everyone I come in contact with because we don’t know what someone may be going through but if we do good every day and make every interaction meaningful we make this world a better place.

What IS plastic surgery?

It is the process of correcting or restoring form or function to any part of the body.

So what does that mean?

A plastic and reconstructive surgeon can work on any part of the body. They have learned and refined a skill set and a mastery of anatomy that allows them to do just this- restore form and/or function.

Posted • Not all superheroes wear capes, including this supermicrosurgeon— Ketan Patel is a core member of our faculty and an internationally renowned microsurgeon, with a focus on lymphedema and limb salvage. residents have the unique opportunity to learn his techniques of lymphovenous bypass, free lymph node transplant, and SCIP flaps, among countless other flaps, and ultimately perform these surgeries under Dr Patel’s keen supervision. When he’s done teaching us how to do sub-millimeter anastomoses, you can find Dr Patel spending time with his beautiful family or working on his golf swing— or often both at the same time!

Happy New Year!! 2021 will be what we make it and that is GREAT! Thank you 2020 for showing us that we are tough, resilient, strong, determined, bright, and hopeful. Our society has been tested and our humanity has shown that we will band together and become even more solid. This is what I have experienced in healthcare and at home this year. And just like that she’s done! These last 6.5 weeks on Ortho hand have been amazing mostly because I have had the pleasure of working with this gem. is an amazing doctor, wonderful human, smart woman, and all around fun! Attendings love her, residents love her, I love her! Thanks Lisa for a phenomenal start to the year. Gonna miss you but grateful to have gained such an awesome friend. @ LAC+USC Medical Center
