Childs Blueberries

Childs Blueberries Childs Blueberry Farm has an online presence at ChildsBlueberries.com We have UPICK and attend farmers markets Many times we go years with no spray at all.

The glaciers stopped about 100 feet down the hill from our farm. One mountain range over is Thunder Rocks in Allegany State Park---also left untouched by the glaciers at the top. CHILDS BLUEBERRIES are grown where the glaciers never hit meaning that the soil is perfect for growing blueberries thus they are nutrient dense--if we plant corn, it grows knee high. The grocery store berries are often gr

own in flatlands with the wrong soil that has been chemically adjusted so blueberries will grow but the flavor is just not good. If you see blueberries and corn or potatoes planted in the same area then you need to try some of our berries

If you like blueberries, I think Childs Blueberries are some of the best. I would put them up against any blueberry on the planet for taste. Studies show that blueberries grown in the right soil with the right climate and the right organic matter, have substantially more nutrients and anti-oxidants than blueberries grown in the wrong soil. At Childs Blueberries, we micromanage our fields, continuing to follow Cornell Universities teaching since 1984, by checking pheromone traps daily to monitor for pests. If we catch a pest in one of the traps, we spray with the mildest of sprays where the food can be eaten the next day. It is 200% more mild than the spray used on most certified organic produce with less residual. As with preventative medicine, by catching the pest incursion early, we cure it quickly and move on--pest free. For this reason, I believe our way is better and "Beyond Organic".

LOOK FOR US IN MAY with Childs Elderberry Elixir, Chemical Free Wines and Untainted Raw Blueberry Blossom or Untainted Raw Elderberry Blossom Honey at the East Aurora Markets on Riley Street (Wine sampling is now permitted!) and North Tonawanda City Market. NEW this year is more dry wines to compliment the sweet. Just enjoyed a bottle of Razzelle Trifecta last night at a dinner dance and then strolled home. I wondered, will my head hurt in the morning? Nope--feel great, as usual--love that chemical free wine! Thank you for your patience as I know many ran out of not only our Beyond Organic Childs Blueberries but our other products, this winter. All I can say is plan to stock up early, if that is your intent.
I love the farmer's market customers--my type of people so while vacationing I sold a truck load last year down here and a truck load and trailer load this year at Ave Maria and again, all sold out in just 8 weeks. The Florida customers were not happy we sold out but I explained, we micromanage our fields, we use the fruit we grow and everytime I try to use boughten ingredients, the quality invariably lets me down and I regret it throwing away the inferior product. We emphasize Foremost in Quality and that means limited supplies of stock and no shipping. I will be back to work restocking mid April from our walk in freezer inventory for our WNY markets. Lots of other makers of elderberry stuff for sale here in Florida but few want theirs choosing ours for the superior quality and results. The elderberries others use would not even work for wine as the green berry they leave in the bought dried or frozen would taint the taste, plus they cut it with tap water and add fillers herbs often sourced from China although called "organic".
You can buy our patented Elderberry plants, if you want. Read on plus a link:

The Journey to a Better Elderberry
By Farmer Dan Childs

It is said you can’t eat elderberries raw but for me, I have been eating them my whole life picked fresh off the wild American elderberry bushes along with wild apples said to be planted by Johnny Appleseed, wild blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. It was a summer smorgasbord as we spent whole days out and about in the woods of Western New York at the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains. European Elderberries, imported and used by 95% of the makers of elderberry products, have less of the beneficial components according to a study by the U. of Missouri and have a lot more bad glycosides than American Elderberries, which is why eating them raw did not bother me.

On weekends, our blueberry picking crew would scour the hills of Appalachia looking for elderberries for my Dad to make wine with. He paid top dollar so this crew would go far and wide to find elderberries on back dirt roads, railroad tracks, pond and river banks, etc. They would visit Chautauqua County, Cattaraugus County and Allegany County, which in total is about 39,000 acres. I asked the crew, “when you find a really good elderberry in the wild, take a cutting and bring it to me”. I got many cuttings, which I cloned and used as starting stock. In exchange, this crew of adventurers heard I was selling my Pontiac Transport van and rather than pay for the cuttings, asked for the van. I was agreeable. We then started a breeding program with one goal---eliminate the green berry that made harvest so slow. If we could eliminate the green berry all the elderberry varieties had, it would revolutionize the elderberry industry! After 28 years, we got the desired result with the Black Diamond Elderberry—99% green berry free. I reached out to Danny Hartmann of Hartmann’s Plant Company to have this variety cloned and he suggested we apply for a patent. Now I had to soul search. I could keep the variety to myself and literally put the other elderberry products to shame. You can’t make a top tier elderberry anything if the green berry is left in as it is taste-tainting and mildly toxic-neutralized by heating to 180 degrees for 5 minutes. ALL the other varieties had this same issue—green berry plus many of them taste like dirt, whereas the Black Diamond has quite a nice flavor. Well, I opted to give the world the Black Diamond Elderberry and Hartmann’s is handling it. Reach out to them to place your order. It is time to retire all the other elderberry varieties.

Visit the Childs Elderberry Elixir link to learn more about what we do with the Black Diamond Elderberry since we are not selling the plants.

PS In 2012, Western New York had 14 days of -20 degrees and 4 of those days were under -26 degrees. Everyone who had Gordon, Johns, etc varieties--they died due to the cold. Only the Black Diamond survived.

I recommend the new patented Black Diamond Elderberry sold exclusively by Hartmann's.

Here is why. ALL the other varieties, despite the pictures they post in advertisements, has a plethora of taste tainting, mildly toxic green berries. When picking, for top quality, one must snap off a cluster of black elderberries, pick out the green berries from top and bottom of the cluster and then throw it in the bucket. Few do this as it is slow so they leave the green berry in. The choice is either develop a variety with less green berry, pick slower but better or just do as all the harvesters do--leave them in. Black Diamond Elderberry is 99% green berry free, the product of a 28 year breeding program by Childs Blueberry and Buffalo Ranch. You can't make good ELDERBERRY wine, jam, pie, syrup or elixir with substandard products. So, if you want to invest in elderberries, you now have a option.
Reach out to Hartmann's, who we gave exclusive rights to sell our variety to. Soon there will be a wait list. On another note, the Black Diamond Elderberry is tested cold resistant to -26 degrees F and the berries are substantially sweeter than the other 15 or so older, out of date Elderberry varieties sold. Why buy a Model T when you can get a Tesla for a few bucks more?

I couldn't believe the couple who have been eating our blueberries for over 40 years looked so good and were so alert at age 93. I loved the twinkle in their eyes as they shared that with me at the East Aurora Farmers Market this last fall. "We eat your berries everyday plus we eat healthy". I thought they were in their late 70's and it inspires me to keep eating a handful of our Beyond Organic blueberries everyday, not just in season. So good frozen!

*Glad to hear it's is helping. Compared to online sellers, there is about $300 worth of elderberries per $40 bottle we sell. That concentration is why it works.
*As fast as I grow and make the Childs Elderberry Elixir Concentrate, it sells. If you do buy the online stuff, even if they say 1 tablespoon...multiply that times five to get the effect of mine and then it is still debatable. They all want to pad their pocket too much.
*We will be back at market in May with Elixir--we suggest buying an annual supply.
*We do not ship selling only local. As farmers, we are not trying to become a giant company nor do we wish to sacrifice quality that mass production engenders.
*The following retailers carry our product but call before driving to make sure they are not sold out...
^Olean Wellness Store
^Nature's Remedy Allegany or Ellicottville.
^Marilla Country Store--sold out until spring.
*Hope this helps and see you at market. Blueberry harvest is July and August including our very nice UPICK Blueberries! Our Beyond Organic, true Family Farm appreciates your business!

A note to the customer who flew from Utah this summer, rented a car, drove to the Childs Blueberry Farm, filled one suitcase with our fresh blueberries and one suitcase with Elderberry Elixir Concentrate, drove back to the airport and flew home...a day trip. I hope what you brought home was worth the trip!?
