What to know about knee stiffness.

A stiff knee is a common complaint, especially among older adults and those who are very physically active. Knee stiffness can occur due to low flexibility or muscular imbalances in the legs, injury, or arthritis. The most suitable treatment for knee stiffness depends on the underlying cause.

Proud to have completed another Chicago Olympic Triathlon this August! 🏊🚴🏃

The course along Chicago’s iconic waterfront is always an incredible experience — nearly a mile swim in Burnham Harbor, a 25-mile bike on Lakeshore Drive, and a 10K run on the Lakefront Path.

After more than 10 years of competing, I’ve learned firsthand that even with well-balanced training, orthopedic injuries can happen to anyone — myself included! Those experiences have given me a deeper appreciation for recovery, rehabilitation, and the importance of adapting to challenges over time.

It’s been especially meaningful to share this event with my family — from racing alongside my dad in the past to now cheering on my son in the Chicago Children’s Triathlon. Physical activity truly fuels both body and mind.

As we say at IBJI — move better, live better! 💪

Appreciate the spotlight from IBJI! Grateful to stay active, set new goals, and keep pushing forward - on and off the bike. 🚴‍♂️💪

🌟 Spotlight Friday 🌟 Ever wonder how our physicians stay active outside the clinic?

Meet Justin M. LaReau, MD, who recently completed the Barry-Roubaix, the world’s largest gravel road bike race! 🚴‍♂️💪

What inspired him to take on the challenge?
“I always enjoy scheduling races in the spring. It helps me to have a goal to drive my training during the long Midwest winters.”

How did he prepare?
Given the weather and surgery schedule, I did most of my foundational work on an indoor trainer. I would ride 40 miles before taking my kids to school, then do 20 more miles after dropping them off! It's important to cross train, so I mixed in strength training as well.

“I challenge myself to continually adapt and push my limits. Because of an orthopedic injury to my knee, I had to pause my Ironman triathlons—the running was too painful.”

Grateful for the chance to combine learning with movement! After attending an orthopedic conference with Dr. Hurbanek, we hit the trails to stay active and enjoy the view.

👟 Staying active—on and off the clock!
Dr. LaReau and Dr. Hurbanek recently attended an orthopedic conference and took advantage of the scenery with a post-event hike. At IBJI, our physicians don’t just treat active lifestyles—they live them! 💪💚
