🌟💫 Tips from an SLP! 💫🌟

When our kids are learning to talk and expand on what they say, it can be helpful to model the words for them. One way is through "parallel talk" where we talk out-loud about what the child is doing and experiencing (seeing, hearing, feeling). Use clear, simple words and phrases. Follow the child's lead during play and engage with and talk about the things they are interested in.

For example, in this video the SLP narrates as the child drives a toy car by saying, "Here I come. I'm driving so fast. Drive fast. Hi car." Search "parallel talk with children" for more information and examples.

🌟💫 Did you know that several children and YA books and series feature main characters with various learning challenges? It can help students feel more understood and embrace what makes them unique when they read about kids with similar learning styles. 💫🌟

What are some of your favorites?

The books featured in this post:

1) Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver features an endearing elementary school student with learning difficulties who has a gift for humor. At least one set of stories uses dyslexie font, a font that makes reading a bit easier.

2) Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is about "a girl with dyslexia who struggles to fit in at school until she meets a teacher who helps her see her true potential."

3) Percy Jackson ad the Olympians series by Rick Riordan follows demigod Percy Jackson's quests with mythical creatures while balancing high school life. He faces several learning challenges associated with dyslexia and ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

These are available at the library and online. We have several of these books at our office so feel free to take a look through them when you come by.

💫This week’s SLRC spotlight is Tanya Miranda! 💫🌟

Tanya has worked for SLR Center since 2005. After earning her Master’s Degree in 2000 for Speech-Language Pathology at Loma Linda University, she began her professional career in the public elementary school setting in Riverside, California. Tanya has always loved the Chattanooga area, having attended Southern Adventist University, so when the opportunity to move back presented itself in 2005, she jumped at the chance! Tanya currently works in both the school and the clinical setting, partnering with teachers and families to improve her clients’ speech, language, and reading skills.

When not working, Tanya spends time with her husband and two children, while supporting their activities. She enjoys outdoor activities, such as horseback riding and hiking, as well as reading, crochet, and calligraphy.
