Ready, Set, Kindergarten!
from Dr Sarah Trimiew, MD, MPH, FAAP
This fall marks an exciting milestone in my family—my daughter just turned five and will be starting kindergarten! Like many parents, I’m feeling a mix of joy, nostalgia, and a little nervous energy as we prepare for this new chapter. It’s a big step for our little ones, and as both a mom and a pediatrician, I want to share ways we can help our children feel confident and ready.
Kindergarten readiness is about more than just knowing ABCs. The American Academy of Pediatrics and early childhood experts encourage us to focus on five key skill areas: learning skills, emotional and social development, language, early math, and self-help/movement. Every child develops at their own pace, but supporting growth in these areas during everyday routines can help set the stage for a great school experience.
This summer, try weaving practice into your day. Let your child help sort laundry by color or pattern. Read stories together and ask questions about the characters. Give them time to play with friends, talk about their feelings, and practice independence—things like brushing teeth, getting dressed, or opening snack containers. Even just five minutes of focused activity—building a puzzle, drawing, or playing pretend—goes a long way.
Remember, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Celebrate the skills they already have and support them with love and encouragement. Visit chatt2.org/Kready or ChattanoogaBasics.org for more tips on nurturing school readiness at home.
