I grew up in the era of no/minimal sunscreen at the pool or beach... so yes, that means I had more than my fair share of sunburns and sun damage. 😫 I am pleased that my kids' generation is growing up learning the importance of sun protection from a young age! If you are looking for safe and effective options for your babies of all ages, keep reading.
☀The Basics, again: broad-spectrum, SPF 30-50, mineral-based, lotions or sticks preferred, reapply every 2-3 hours.
💦Do your kids love the pool as much as mine do? Remember there is no such thing as "waterproof" sunscreen! The FDA does not allow manufacturers to make this claim. Sunscreens must undergo more testing to be designated as "water-resistant" for either 40 or 80 minutes. If you're swimming or sweating, you need to reapply at the 40 or 80 min mark!
🧽Applying sunscreen on kids can feel like wrestling a greased pig. Try using a large sponge or a Solar Buddies applicator on the body, and a sunscreen stick on the face.
👶Favorite Sunscreens for Babies
Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby, lotion or stick: Easy to find in stores and affordable. This was my favorite one for my babies at age 6-18 months.
Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby, stick: Water-resistant 80 minutes, made with plant-based ingredients, and approved by the EWG.
Aveeno Continuous Protection sunscreen lotion: Great for sensitive, eczema-prone skin.
Think Sun ThinkBaby: Also on the EWG approved list, and one of the top-recommended baby sunscreens I've seen.
👧Favorite Sunscreens for Kids
Blue Lizard Sunscreen Kids spray, stick, or lotion: Our current go-to for ages 6 and 10 yrs old! Love this mineral spray for reapplication at the pool.
Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids: Also one of our favorites at the beach. Good for sensitive skin and water-resistant.
ThinkKids lotion: This brand is a great go-to!
Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Kids: "Sheer" might be a bit of an exaggeration, but this is still a great water-resistant option in a stick and lotion!
Of course, the baby options are also good for kids, and the kids mineral sunscreens are generally safe for babies, too--so don't feel like you need multiple versions of the same product for your entire crew! Just make sure each kid has their own bottle when you send them off to camp this summer. 😎
