We’re proud to announce Covenant Medical Center is now offering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), an advanced surgical treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and other movement disorders.

Led by Neurologist Dr. Katie Hendley and Neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Scranton, our DBS program is designed to help patients regain independence, reduce symptoms, and improve overall quality of life.

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical procedure that involves implanting wires, or electrodes, in the brain and using safe and mild electrical impulses to stimulate them. This stimulation eases irregular body movements that can interfere with how a patient moves naturally and what they do in everyday life.

Clyde, our first DBS patient, has been living with Parkinson’s since 2021. Since receiving DBS treatment, Clyde has experienced significant improvement in his tremors. “I’m excited to see what all I can accomplish and would do it again in a heartbeat,” he shared.

As the only hospital in West Texas and eastern New Mexico offering this treatment, this milestone reflects our commitment to expanding access to innovative care that enhances quality of life for patients across our region.

"I recently met a patient during his hospitalization who wanted to share his story with me.
He told me several years ago he was a patient at Covenant Medical Center for four months while he battled COVID. He said 'Covenant saved my life' and proceeded to tell me about the specific people who made his experience 'less lonely and frightening' during his extended stay with us. He remembered his transporter, Diana, and his nurse, Mary.
During this current stay, Diana Torrez checked him into the unit. He said he felt an 'instant comfort and gratitude' that he would finally be able to personally thank her for the care she provided all those years ago. He brought Diana to tears by realizing the impact she had on him. He told her, 'Thank you, I will never forget you!' He raved about how Diana spoke Spanish to him, and how she was compassionate and sincere as she cared for him each time he traveled to Endoscopy.
Diana is a very hard-working person, and I am proud she is part of my team! She is not only our one and only CNA, she is our transporter and assists in the many other roles in the department. She truly is an angel and deserves to be recognized every day! The fact that this gentleman remembers her YEARS later speaks volumes of who she is!" -Velinda Betancur, Covenant Medical Center Endoscopy Supervisor

Diana's compassion, sincerity, and ability to bring comfort to others truly exemplify the spirit of healing we strive for every day. We’re incredibly grateful to have her on our team, making a lasting impact on every patient she encounters.

"We recently had a patient come in for a blood draw who was extremely afraid of needles. Nancy Nix, the lab manager, noticed his distress and spoke with him and his wife. She arranged for a bed in Radiology, as the ER was busy and overwhelming for him.

Yvette, a laboratory assistant, brought the patient to Radiology and learned he needed blood screening work for a possible bone marrow donation. Years ago, he and his wife had registered as donors in college and were now fulfilling that promise.

Nancy provided ice and wet washcloths to keep him comfortable. Yvette kept him talking to distract him and successfully completed the blood draw. She shared her own experience as a donor, inspired by a young girl with Ewing’s sarcoma she had met at a previous job.

The girl needed frequent bone marrow and platelet donations. Seeing the family’s journey and the shortage of donors inspired Yvette to become a donor herself. She gave bone marrow twice, once to an 11-year-old with leukemia and once a 17-year-old with bone cancer.

Yvette's story and empathy deeply moved the patient and his wife, turning a fearful moment into a meaningful one." - Christina Daniels, Medical Imaging Manager, Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital

Yvette’s kindness and ability to connect with patients on a personal level leaves a lasting impact. Her compassion is a true example of care in action.

We were honored to welcome Bishop Peter Baldacchino to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital to bless our new Heritage Wall and handcrafted crosses for patient rooms. The wall reflects the stories of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and the Sisters of Providence, along with the legacy of healthcare in Hobbs. The crosses were lovingly made in Lea County from locally sourced Mesquite, Cedar, and Pine.
