Danielle Bollinger never expected a cancer diagnosis at 48, especially with no family history. But on January 2nd, she was diagnosed with invasive carcinoma breast cancer.

“Cancer is a scary word. The first thing I thought was, I’m leaving my family.”

Danielle chose Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center for her care. “I found strength with my healthcare providers. I felt loved and like I had no worries.”

One of her biggest fears was losing her hair during chemo. For many women, hair is part of their identity. Thanks to the cooling cap, a device that helps reduce hair loss, Danielle was able to preserve her hair and her confidence.

“If I were to come up to you, and not know you, I don’t think you would know that I had cancer at all, because of the cooling cap.”

After several rounds of chemo and radiation, Danielle is now cancer free. To hear more of Danielle’s story, visit: http://ms.spr.ly/6186sFoee

We tested Cleto Cordero and Kaitlin Butts on how well they know each other’s songs, and safe to say, they aced it! 🎶

They put on a great performance last night at our annual House Concert fundraiser benefiting Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center. Huge thanks to these two incredible artists and everyone who showed up to support cancer care in our region.

“Going outside with wet hair makes you sick.” 🥶 “Put onions in your socks to fight a cold.” 🧅 🧦

We’ve all heard these old wives’ tales (and maybe even believed them). But Aubrey Rodriguez, FNP, isn’t buying them.

In this week's episode of Health Her Way, we’re talking all things sick season: what actually works when it comes to staying well, when it’s time to visit your doctor, and how to care for yourself and others when cold and flu season hits.

What does a better tomorrow look like for someone facing cancer? At Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center, it means never standing still - constantly learning, sharing, and bringing the most advanced cancer care to the people of our community.

This weekend, our newest radiation oncologist, Dr. Eduardo Urias, joined fellow oncology experts at the regional Oncology Nursing Society Symposium, ‘Transforming Cancer Care for a Better Tomorrow,’ to share how cutting-edge radiation therapy is expanding what’s possible, even for patients whose cancer has spread.

"Behind every innovation are passionate, compassionate professionals dedicated to improving lives. I’m proud of Dr. Urias and our entire Covenant team for the incredible work they do every day to bring hope and healing to our patients. Together, we’re building that better tomorrow, right here at home." - Gabriel Axelrud, MD, Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of the Oncology Service Line at Covenant Health

On July 20, Nicky Napper, a strong and active 66-year-old who works full-time and manages his farm in Dawson County, was admitted to Covenant Medical Center with what was initially believed to be pneumonia.
Pulmonologist Dr. Marque Hunter quickly suspected something more serious. Additional tests revealed Nicky had suffered a heart attack.

The next day, Cardiologist Dr. Marina Iskandir performed an angiogram that uncovered severe blockage in his heart. Cardiac Thoracic Surgeon Dr. David Malave was consulted, and a few days later, Nicky underwent a successful triple bypass.

Throughout his recovery, Nicky and his family expressed that they were surrounded by compassionate care. Dr. Hunter, Dr. Iskandir, Dr. Malave, and Heather Greene, NP, checked in daily with not only medical updates, but also words of comfort and encouragement. They are also grateful for the incredible team on the unit, including his nurse Armondo, case manager Annette, and the physical and occupational therapy teams.

His daughter, a Covenant nurse of 10 years, shared:
“As a nurse myself for 16 years, and a Covenant employee for 10 years, this was my first time experiencing care from the other side. I could not be more proud to be part of this organization.”

Today, Nicky is doing well and continues to recover each day.

"We recently had a patient come in for a blood draw who was extremely afraid of needles. Nancy Nix, the lab manager, noticed his distress and spoke with him and his wife. She arranged for a bed in Radiology, as the ER was busy and overwhelming for him.

Yvette, a laboratory assistant, brought the patient to Radiology and learned he needed blood screening work for a possible bone marrow donation. Years ago, he and his wife had registered as donors in college and were now fulfilling that promise.

Nancy provided ice and wet washcloths to keep him comfortable. Yvette kept him talking to distract him and successfully completed the blood draw. She shared her own experience as a donor, inspired by a young girl with Ewing’s sarcoma she had met at a previous job.

The girl needed frequent bone marrow and platelet donations. Seeing the family’s journey and the shortage of donors inspired Yvette to become a donor herself. She gave bone marrow twice, once to an 11-year-old with leukemia and once a 17-year-old with bone cancer.

Yvette's story and empathy deeply moved the patient and his wife, turning a fearful moment into a meaningful one." - Christina Daniels, Medical Imaging Manager, Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital

Yvette’s kindness and ability to connect with patients on a personal level leaves a lasting impact. Her compassion is a true example of care in action.
