A few highlights from last year (including some birthy stats for nerds like me):

I caught my first baby at a super precipitous home birth (disclaimer: doulas are not midwives and this is not my standard practice), expanded my services to include postpartum doula support, supported my first surgical birth, and spent countless hours on a complete high from witnessing the literal awe inducing process that is giving birth.

I owe huge THANK YOU to all of the families that invited me into their lives - I bet on myself this year and you bet on me too. I’m already one birth deep into 2023, and I am so excited to see what else is in store this year ✨

The last few months of 2022 were busy!

6️⃣ more joined the BloomMama baby squad between October and December, and not a single one of these tiny humans were born on their estimated due dates. As a matter of fact….

4️⃣ out of the 6 were born after their guess date!

🎢 These tiny human’s parents navigated a LOT during pregnancy and birth - from conversations about suspected big babies to unexpected changes in birth locations and birth plans and everything in between

📝 Over here we build birth plans that include preferences for ideal scenarios and unexpected or unplanned for scenarios like induction or surgical birth.

🏃🏾‍♀️💨I also navigated several new experiences while supporting these clients, including having 2 people in labor at the same time in different places. (I made it to both and even got to get a full night’s sleep in between 😉)

💟 I’m so grateful as always for these families choosing me and trusting me to support them as they navigated the twists and turns of their birth and postpartum experiences.

🎤 *taps mic* Is this thing on? It’s been a while since I introduced myself!

👋🏾 I’m Jhenielle (pronounced ‘jen-eel’). I’m a birth and postpartum doula serving expectant families in northern NJ.

💡I became interested in birth work after studying abroad and conducting an independent research project with midwives in Argentina the concept of ‘parto humanizado’, or , which centers the needs and wishes of the birth giver during labor and childbirth. This was a formative experience for me and was the beginning of a deep dive into the world of maternal and child health.

📚 I took classes on maternal and child health, learned about things like the weathering hypothesis and doulas, and filled my personal IG feed with all things birth. I also dropped my pre-med track because organic chem and physics. Yikes. 😬 I knew I wanted to be a doula one day but didn’t know quite how it would fit into my life

⏩ Fast forward 6 years, I was working in philanthropy on a project focused on college access and the pandemic hit. Like a lot of people, I re-evaluated my life and really considered what I was putting off and why, and decided to purse a doula training

⏩ Fast forward another year and change, and I launched BloomMama Birth Services in September 2021 and onboarded my first client!

🤰🏾I love working with clients who are eager to be informed about their options during pregnancy and birth, who are looking for affirming support, but not a magic bullet (bc that I am not) and who are willing to put in the work to achieve the type of birth they desire

🌍 When I’m not at a birth, you can find me hours deep into an audiobook or plotting my next trip (probably somewhere warm)

🧶 I’ve also recently picked up crocheting again much to the delight of my grandma who taught me when I was ~9 years old

🔗 if you’re expecting or know someone who is, tell a friend to tell a friend to schedule a consult with me!

👇🏾 I’m hoping to get to know the people who are with me on the interwebs better this year, so tell me, what brings you here?

Alora decided to make her way into the world four weeks before her estimated due date (see: due dates are just an estimate and babies are born on their birthdays), and what made her birth even more special is that she shares the same birthday as her mom. While Alora’s mom certainly did not expect to spend her birthday in labor in the hospital, she navigated the unexpected circumstances that arose during the course of her labor experience with grace and an informed perspective. A little over 18 hours after her mom went into labor, Alora made her way into the world, right on time. Welcome, baby Alora! 🥰

I had the privilege of supporting Jamal’s parents when their doula was unable to attend his birth. I walked into a room to support a couple that had never met me before in the midst of one of their most vulnerable moments. Not only had they not met me before, but they were also coming to terms with the fact that their planned birth center birth would now be a hospital birth due to unforeseen circumstances. When I arrived, Jamal’s parents immediately welcomed me into their space, and we got to work alternating various labor positions, rest, and physical comfort measures. Jamal’s mom’s biggest goal was to have a vaginal, pain medication-free birth, even though she’d been induced. There were periods in time where she was discouraged with her progress but as she surrendered and rode the waves of birth, and trusted her body, she progressed much faster than she was expecting and gave birth to a beautiful baby. One of my favorite parts about working with this couple was the way that Jamal’s dad and I teamed up to support his partner. Without having to be told, he mimicked the comfort measures I offered, made suggestions based on his knowledge of his partner and was an overall amazing support system. Welcome, baby Jamal 🥰

Bringing a new baby into your life can be hard, no matter if it’s your first or your fifth. I am a doula because I believe all expectant parents deserve to be supported. Typical baby registries tend to focus on things for baby, and new parents can be left in the lurch.

That’s why I’m so excited to partner with Be Her Village, a gift registry platform that makes it easy for parents-to-be to get the funds they need to pay for the support they deserve.

With BeHerVillage.com you can actually add doula support, lactation services, childbirth education, and so much more onto your registry. It’s free to create a registry and all of the money that is contributed to your registry goes directly to you to help pay for your services. Use the link under my profile photo to add my services to your registry today!

This is a but this is also a post about support. So while you join me in welcoming Otto, know that as much as expectant parents need support, doulas do too! When Baby Otto jumpstarted his mama’s labor process by kicking out his bag of waters during a time where I wasn’t able to be there to physically support her, I called on my fellow doula . Shanita was an amazing backup doula and provided excellent continuity of care for my clients as Otto made his way into the world. I’m so grateful for her support! If you’re pregnant and looking for a doula, ask your doula about having a backup because it is a must. Babies come when they are ready and sometimes life happens but having a supportive team is imperative - both for doulas and expectant parents!

Marley’s is one full of many unexpected twists and turns—her mama was in labor for 4 days before she made her entrance. What stands out to me about Marley’s birth story is that her parents were informed and educated about their options during birth after taking the childbirth education class with instructor Ali Buchanan . Birth often does not go as planned but being educated about your options can make all the difference in having an empowered birth experience where you maintain a sense of agency and are an active participant in the decision making about your care. Marley’s mama is a true champ and it was an honor to be present as she made her entrance into the world ✨

Making sure that my clients have access to resources for the entire perinatal period is key to my doula support! Yes I’m your birth doula but I’m here to connect you with other providers and resources that can give you the wraparound support you need during pregnancy and postpartum as well. And one thing about me is that I’m not afraid to say I don’t know—if I don’t know the answer I’ll figure it out or point you to someone who does! I’m so grateful for every single client that trusts me to support them during their transition to parenthood 💜

Happy 1 week of life to the first baby I’ve ever caught! Last Friday baby Laiyah took the world by surprise by making her grand entrance at her grandma’s house in a very much unplanned precipitous home birth. I got there just in time to catch baby Laiyah and she is as sweet as can be. Mama rocked her contractions and just when she thought she couldn’t do it, she dug deep and brought her baby earthside. Doulas are *not* midwives but I will catch a baby in a heartbeat if needed!

Last week baby Ashton kicked off a flurry of August births for me! His mama had her sights set on a pain medication-free birth and she dug deep to achieve her goal. Special shoutout to the peanut ball that allowed her to get some much needed rest while still creating space for baby to make his way down.

You too can have the birth that you desire with education and support from a doula! Schedule your free consultation with me today using the link in my bio!
