There’s something about August.

Even if you’re not a student anymore, or a parent of one, this time of year tends to stir something in us. Maybe it’s the smell of sharpened pencils in the air, the crazy back-to-school shopping run, taking your final summer getaway,  or the quiet grief of summer slipping away. Maybe it’s the way our calendars start to fill up again before we know it.

At BeWELL, we’ve noticed it too:
* That bittersweet pang that shows up when the sunlight starts shifting
* The quiet pressure to get “back on track”
* * The flood of shoulds—I should be more productive. I should feel more ready. I should have done more this summer.

But here’s the truth:
Back-to-school season isn’t just about school.
It’s about transitions. Identity. Emotional re-entry.

Back-to-school isn’t just for kids. Think of this season as a reset for your own wellbeing, too. If therapy has been on pause or on your mind, now is the perfect time to reconnect.

Real Talk Q&A: BeWELL BIPOC Therapists Answer Common Therapy Questions

Culturally sensitive therapy acknowledges how race, ethnicity, systemic injustice, family history, and cultural identity all impact your mental and emotional well-being. It’s not an “add-on”—it’s a core part of how we understand your experience.

At BeWELL, we believe that therapy should reflect and honor your full identity, not ask you to leave parts of it at the door.

We’re here to help you navigate the pressures of modern life, fostering meaningful change that brings balance and fulfillment to all areas of your well-being.

MID-SUMMER CHECK-IN

☀️ 5 Tips for Summertime Mental Health Wellness 🧘‍♀️

Summer isn’t just for vacations — it’s a perfect time to reset your mind, too.

Here are 5 simple ways to protect your mental health this season:

1️⃣ Set boundaries with your time + energy

2️⃣ Prioritize hydration + movement

3️⃣ Make space for joy, not just obligations

4️⃣ Unplug regularly (yes, from all the screens)

5️⃣ Protect your sleep, even on long sunny nights

Your mental health deserves as much care as your summer plans. 🌿💛

🗒️ A Note From Our Founder, Gasperoni, LCSW-R 🤍

As the founder of BeWELL and as a white woman, I know that the mental health field was not built with everyone’s experiences equally in mind. For too long, therapy in this country has centered on white, Western norms and has overlooked the unique needs, stories, and strengths of various racial and ethnic minorities.

Over the past few decades in this field, I’ve seen firsthand the gaps this creates, the moments when people feel they have to educate their therapist about their culture instead of simply being able to heal. That’s why one of my commitments as a founder has always been to build a practice where representation matters, and where people can see themselves reflected in the therapists who walk alongside them.

This BIPOC Mental Health Month, I want to step back and highlight the voices of our incredible BIPOC therapists at BeWELL. Their insights, care, and lived experiences make our work stronger, and they’re sharing from the heart in our new video series that launched this month.

My hope is that mental health care keeps evolving until every person feels seen, respected, and understood. And that starts with listening.

Racial and Culturally Sensitive Therapy in NYC, Hoboken, and Beyond 🤍

At BeWELL Psychotherapy, we understand that your lived experience—your race, culture, identity, and personal history—shapes how you move through the world and how you heal. We offer racially and culturally sensitive therapy in NYC, Hoboken, and virtually for BIPOC clients, first- and second-generation immigrants, and anyone navigating the emotional complexities of identity, belonging, and mental health.

Many of our clinicians are therapists of color themselves. All are culturally trained, trauma-informed, and identity-affirming in their approach. Like many of our clients, several of our therapists have also been the first in their families to go to therapy. They understand what it means to carry expectations, code-switch, feel unseen, 3or be asked to explain your experience in spaces that should already understand it.

Whether you’re working through racial trauma, microaggressions, intergenerational pressure, or you’re simply looking for a therapist who gets it, BeWELL is here to hold space for your full story—with depth, compassion, and clarity.

We ALL feel anxious, depressed, stressed, and struggle with mental illness. However, BIPOC are the least likely to seek mental health treatment. One of BeWELL’s missions is to provide customized therapy for ALL people.

Here are some steps BeWELL has taken to decrease these mental health treatment disparities…

💙 Having a DIVERSE staff - this ensures that people are able to seek mental health treatment from someone who looks like them and shares lived experiences

💙 Research shows that people are more likely to go to a healthcare provider that shares similar identities to them - which is why BeWELL has clinicians on staff of various racial, ethnical, sexual, and religious backgrounds.

💙 Prioritizing continuing education so that BeWELL therapists are up to date on issues of social justice and multiculturalism. We know that our duty as mental health clinicians is to be aware of the various issues our oppressed clients face every day.

Minority mental health is IMPORTANT. Here’s to taking steps to decrease the disparities in mental health care!

🌞 June Is Men’s Mental Health Month — And the Start of Summer

It’s the perfect time to prioritize your mental well-being. Whether it’s soaking up the sun or establishing a new routine, small changes can make a big difference.

☀️ Embrace the Outdoors
Sunlight naturally boosts vitamin D and serotonin, helping lift your mood and energy levels. Try walking, hiking, gardening, or just relaxing in the park.

🏃 Stay Active
Exercise releases endorphins — your brain’s feel-good chemicals. Aim for regular movement, whether it’s a gym session, a bike ride, or a swim.

🧘 Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps reduce stress and keep you grounded. Try yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or simply tuning in to your senses during a summer stroll.

📅 Create a Flexible Summer Routine
With school breaks and holidays, it’s easy to lose structure. A simple daily routine provides stability and helps manage stress and expectations.

👥 Seek Support
Mental health struggles are real — and you don’t have to face them alone. Reach out to friends, family, or join a support group.

BeWELL offers therapy, EMDR, and Mind-Body Coaching both in person and virtually in NJ/NY. Schedule your free 20-minute consultation with our client care coordinator today!
