One of the easiest ways to create more intentional yoga classes is to sequence toward a peak pose.

Think of your class like a roadmap. Each posture prepares the body for the actions needed later.

When the peak pose arrives, students feel prepared rather than surprised.

Do your students say their low back hurts in Camel Pose?

Often the issue isn’t the pose itself — it’s where the backbend is happening.

When students place their hands directly on the low back, it can encourage the entire pose to collapse into the lumbar spine, which is already flexible.

Instead, try cueing students to hook their thumbs under their armpits and lift the chest up and back before reaching for the heels.

This encourages the backbend to happen in the upper back (thoracic spine) where we want the work to occur.

Small teaching adjustments like this can make a huge difference for your students.
