It starts as something you notice. Then it’s something you plan around.

You stop sitting on certain chairs. You dread the car ride to work. You stand up weird because you already know bending over is going to get you.

Your body responds to what’s been there. The longer something is bothering a nerve, the more your body does to work around it. Muscles tighten. Movement changes. You start favoring one side without realizing it.

Simple test you can do right now:

Sit in a chair. Straighten your affected leg out in front of you. Point your toes toward your shin.

If that recreates the shooting pain - that’s nerve tension. The nerve is being pulled tight somewhere between your lower back and your leg.

Now try this: slump forward while doing the same thing. Worse? That tells you the compression may be coming from your spine.

This test is called a slump test. We use it to figure out where along the nerve path the problem is.

Next time your alarm goes off, get up. Even if you’re stiff.

Pain is never the first sign of a problem.

Your body shows you mechanical problems before it shows you pain. Head won’t turn as far right. One shoulder higher. You favor one leg standing.

People ignore those because they don’t hurt. Three weeks later their neck seizes and they wonder what happened that day.

Nothing happened that day. The alignment problem was there for weeks - pain just became the only way to get your attention.

Simple exercise that may help when your neck is causing hand numbness.

Chin tucks. Sounds basic, but here’s why they work.
Sit up straight. Pull your chin straight back - like you’re making a double chin. Hold for 5 seconds. Relax. Repeat 10 times.

Do this 3 times a day.
What this does: strengthens the deep muscles in your neck that keep your head from drifting forward. When your head sits too far forward, it pulls on the nerves that go to your arms.

Every inch your head sits forward adds 10 pounds of stress on your neck. That stress compresses nerves.
Chin tucks help reverse that pattern.

Will this fix severe nerve compression? No. But it helps reduce the daily stress that makes it worse.

If you’ve been dealing with numbness for weeks or months, you need more than exercises. You need to know exactly which nerve is compressed and why.

That’s where examination comes in. We test specific movements, check which fingers are affected, and find the level where the pressure is coming from.

Then we can actually address it instead of just managing symptoms.

Numbness and tingling are not normal.

Sleeping position matters more than you think when you have nerve issues.

If you wake up with numb hands, try this tonight:
Sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees. This keeps your spine neutral and takes pressure off your lower back.

If you’re a side sleeper, put a pillow between your knees. Keeps your hips level so your spine doesn’t twist.

Avoid stomach sleeping. It forces your neck to turn all night and puts constant strain on the nerves in your neck.

Your sleeping position affects your spine for 6-8 hours straight. That’s a long time to be putting pressure on already irritated nerves.

Will fixing your sleep position cure nerve compression? No.

But it can help avoid making it worse every single night while you’re trying to heal.
