CBMC WELCOMES DR. IAN KOVACH FOR ORTHOPEDIC OUTREACH SERVICES

Clara Barton Medical Center is thrilled to welcome Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Ian Kovach as he begins providing outreach services in Hoisington. Dr. Kovach will see patients two Thursdays each month in the Surgical Clinic and perform total knee and hip replacement procedures at Clara Barton Hospital. This additional service increases access to orthopedic care locally, keeping advanced treatment close to home.

A native of Pratt, Kansas, Dr. Kovach has practiced medicine for 27 years. He earned his undergraduate degree and PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing medical school at Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and his fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Specializing in reconstructive surgery of the adult hip and knee, Dr. Kovach is passionate about restoring patients to a pain-free, active lifestyle. He was drawn to CBMC because of its reputation for kind, quality care.

Dr. Kovach’s primary practice is based in Pratt, where he has served the community throughout his career. He already sees many patients from the Hoisington area and looks forward to expanding access to care through this outreach partnership with CBMC.

Joining Dr. Kovach in outreach efforts are his two Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), Kelli Smiley and Laura Ballard, who will support patient care both in the clinic and throughout the surgical process, further enhancing coordinated orthopedic services at CBMC.

The Clara Barton Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications!

The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is currently seeking applicants for its 2026 healthcare career scholarships. Each year, the foundation awards several scholarships to students pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Scholarship amounts vary depending on the merits of the application and funds available from the endowments. The four scholarships to be awarded this year are the Jonathan Witt Scholarship, the Sadie Stalcup Scholarship, the Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship, and the Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship. The application deadline for all scholarships is April 1, 2026.

Both the Jonathan Witt and Sadie Stalcup scholarships are limited to applicants accepted into, currently enrolled in, or planning to pursue a healthcare career. Applicants must be current residents or high school graduates in the Clara Barton service area.

The Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship was established at the request of her family to assist students in their academic pursuit to become an LPN, RN, or BSN. Applicants must be admitted to a nursing program and have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship cannot be awarded to pre-nursing students.

Established by his family in honor of his dedicated service to the patients of Clara Barton Medical Center, the Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship assists employees of Clara Barton in continuing their education. Only current employees are eligible, and if interested, can call the foundation office to learn more about this scholarship. This specific scholarship application will be accepted year-round until funds are distributed.

Last year’s scholarship recipients were Bryce Steffan, Chandra Ehler, Emilee Hall, Erin Babcock, Khloe Schneweis, Liza Fuentes (Ward), Madelynn Gregg, Morgan Beckwith, Shaylee Leiker, and Jennah Hoopingarner. Clara Barton Medical Center is pleased to welcome Dr. John L. Allen, Interventional Radiologist, to the medical team. Dr. Allen will provide advanced interventional radiology (IR) services in Hoisington several days each month, expanding access to specialized, minimally invasive procedures for patients in the region.

Dr. Allen brings more than two decades of experience in both diagnostic and interventional radiology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, completed his Diagnostic Radiology residency in 1999, and went on to complete a fellowship in Interventional Radiology in 2000.

Dr. Allen is the President of Advanced Radiology, a company he founded in 2005. Through Advanced Radiology, he provides interventional radiology coverage across much of Nebraska and into Kansas, serving numerous hospitals, surgery centers, and imaging facilities throughout the region. In addition, he founded Midwest Imaging in Grand Island, Nebraska, in 2006. He was also the first interventional radiologist in the state of Nebraska to perform the ELVT procedure, reflecting his commitment to innovation and advanced patient care.

At CBMC, Dr. Allen will offer a wide range of interventional radiology procedures, including but not limited to:
• Epidural injections
• Lung, liver, and thyroid biopsies
• Breast biopsies
• Joint injections
• Bone marrow biopsies
• PICC line placements
• CT-guided fiducial marker placement
• Other advanced minimally invasive IR procedures

These services provide patients with less invasive care, quicker recovery times, and fewer hospital visits, while allowing them to remain within their local healthcare system.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Allen enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. His depth of experience, leadership in interventional radiology, and patient-centered approach make him a valuable addition to the CBMC team.

Swallowing difficulties can impact everyday life — but help is available. Our Therapy Services team offers Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) AmpCare to help strengthen swallowing muscles and improve function for individuals experiencing dysphagia.
