Today, we pause to honor the life and service of Nick Gray.

Nick Gray served as a paramedic for many years, answering the call in multiple communities with compassion, strength, and an unwavering dedication to helping others. He was the kind of provider who made a difference not just through his skills, but through his heart.

After a long and difficult battle with illness, Nick has passed, leaving behind a legacy of service, sacrifice, and kindness that will not be forgotten.

Even in his final moments, Nick continued to give—through organ donation, offering life to others in need.

We ask that you keep his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, Nick. Your last call is complete. We’ll take it from here.

🚑 Hughes County EMS Bond Election – April 7, 2026 🚑

Pictured here are Clayton, our Billing Specialist, and TJ, our EMS Director—two of the many people working diligently to keep emergency medical services running smoothly for our county.

On April 7th, Hughes County residents will vote on a proposed $745,000 EMS bond to support our service.
This proposal requires no new or higher taxes to fund the bond.

If approved, these funds would be used to:
• Replace aging ambulances
• Purchase essential, life-saving equipment
• Maintain and house those resources to ensure reliable coverage across our communities

Hughes County EMS proudly serves Holdenville, Calvin, Wetumka, and surrounding rural areas—responding to thousands of calls each year. When you dial 911, every second matters, and having dependable equipment is critical to providing the care our citizens deserve.

This proposal is about maintaining the level of service our communities rely on every day.

🗳️ We encourage all registered voters to learn more and participate in the election on April 7th.

Your voice matters. Your vote matters.

Six Years Ago Today

On March 13, 2020, the United States declared a national emergency in response to COVID-19. Two days earlier, the World Health Organization had declared it a global pandemic.

For EMS and healthcare workers, the world changed almost overnight.

March 2020 Timeline

March 11
• WHO declares a pandemic
• The National Basketball Association suspends its season

March 13
• U.S. national emergency declared
• Schools begin closing
• Hospitals activate disaster plans

Within weeks
• PPE shortages across the country
• EMS protocols change rapidly
• Ambulances undergo enhanced decontamination

What Changed

EMS agencies quickly adapted:
• Nebulizers restricted due to aerosol risk
• Dispatch screening questions added
• Increased PPE use on calls

The Impact:

Beyond the virus, communities faced isolation, financial stress, and rising mental health crises. EMS providers responded to increases in overdoses and su***de attempts during that time. Many lost personal friends.

Many small businesses struggled, and some never reopened.

Even today, some changes remain — including reduced retail hours at stores… like Walmart… and the widespread use of telemedicine.

Six Years later, life has largely returned to normal, but the lessons remain.

Six years later, we still remember the calls, the patients, and the lessons that changed how we serve our communities.

Take care of yourselves and each other. Your health — both physical and mental — matters.
