Sleep is essential for growing teens, but it’s not just about how much they get. New research from Penn State College of Medicine suggests that irregular sleep schedules and late nights could increase the risk of heart disease later in life.

A team led by Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, PhD, found that teens with inconsistent sleep patterns had lower heart rate variability, a key marker of heart health. Their findings highlight the importance of maintaining a regular sleep schedule — even on weekends — to support long-term cardiovascular health.
