Tensor Fascia Lata

This is a larger issue than most of us realize. It has a big issue with leg movement.

*Function:

-Primary function: to assist in walking by stabilizing the pelvis and lower limb

-Hip Flexion: Bending the hip (bringing the knee toward the abdomen)

-Hip Abduction: Moving the leg away from the midline of the body

-Hip Internal Rotation: Rotating the thigh inward

-Knee Stabilization: Tightens the IT band to brace & stabilize the knee

*Common Issues & Symptoms:
The TFL can become tight or strained, often due to prolonged sitting or overuse in activities like running & cycling.

*Symptoms include:

-Pain and soreness in the outer hip joint or down the outside of the thigh.

-Pain when lying on the affected side during sleep.

-Stiffness or difficulty with hip extension (leaning backward).

-Referred pain in the lower back or knee (often associated with IT band syndrome).

Psoas Muscle

I have had quite a few clients come in lately with this unfortunate issue. All of them think it's their low back or SI joint mainly. Those can surely be an issue, but I would demise it is not the entire issue. Please consider allowing a professional to help you form your best self and reach your goals of better movement and less pain.

-Primary Functions of the Psoas:

*Hip Flexion: The psoas is a primary hip flexor, essential for lifting the knees toward the chest during activities like walking, running, and climbing stairs.

*Spinal Stabilization: It helps stabilize the lumbar spine and maintain proper posture while sitting or standing.

*Trunk Movement: Unilateral contraction assists with side-bending the trunk, while bilateral contraction helps raise the trunk from a lying position (like during a sit-up).

-Common Issues with Psoas:

*Tightness and Weakness: Prolonged sitting can cause the psoas to become short and tight, leading to stiffness, lower back pain, and an anterior pelvic tilt.

*Psoas Syndrome: Irritation or injury to the muscle can cause pain in the lower back, hip, buttock, or groin, which can be difficult to diagnose due to the muscle's deep location.

*Emotional Connection: The psoas is linked to the body's "fight-or-flight" response and can hold physical tension related to emotional stress or trauma.
