Thinking about getting a service dog or training one yourself? Here's what you need to know before starting the journey.

✔️ Start with the right dog.

Not every dog is suited for service work. Breeds like Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, and Border Collies are traditionally used because of their intelligence, trainability, and calm demeanor.

That said, any breed can be appropriate if the dog is calm, intelligent, and eager to learn. The key is choosing a puppy with the right temperament for the work they'll be doing.

✔️ Training takes time and expertise.

Service dogs typically require 18–24 months of dedicated training to reliably perform the tasks their handler needs. Only about 30–50% of dogs that start training actually graduate. The rest may become therapy animals or “career change” pets.

✔️ Considering self-training? You don’t have to do it alone.

Many handlers choose to train their own service dog with guidance from a professional dog trainer. Most modern trainers use positive reinforcement techniques, helping you build a clear, consistent plan to teach and reward specific service behaviors.

When you become a 2026 Community Partner, you directly support real people like our friends Bill and Cindy — helping remove barriers so they can live with dignity, choice, and connection.

Here’s what Bill and Cindy shared about their journey with us:

“We came to DNL six years ago for help filling out online forms, starting with food stamps. It was hard to find real help, but the DNL staff sat with us and guided us every step of the way. Later, when we needed housing assistance, other places just gave us a website — but DNL helped us apply. Thanks to their support, we finally moved into Midtown Village, our top choice after 11 years. The lower rent allowed us to save enough to buy a car. We love it here — our bathroom is accessible, there’s a garden and community room, and we’re even learning to grow our own food. We go to bingo and pizza nights, and our social life has improved so much. None of this would’ve been possible without DNL.”

In an emergency, being able to connect with others quickly can make all the difference. Do you have a plan for how you’ll communicate during a disaster?

Creating a communication plan is an essential step in emergency preparedness, especially for people with disabilities who may have mobility, hearing, or communication barriers.

Here’s how to get started:

1️⃣ Identify an emergency contact — someone outside your immediate area who can help coordinate if local lines go down.

2️⃣ Make a list of important numbers and share it with your support network.

3️⃣ Consider communication methods that work best for you — text, relay services, or visual alerts.

4️⃣ Practice your plan with friends, family, or caregivers so everyone knows what to do.

Pro tip: If you use assistive technology, make sure it’s fully charged and backed up whenever bad weather is expected.

While we are only a few days away from fall, winter doesn’t wait — and neither should your preparations. Snow, ice, and power outages can bring serious challenges, especially for people with disabilities. Taking steps now can help you stay safe, warm, and ready.

Here are four accessible winter prep tips to get started:

1️⃣ Stock your emergency kit with essential medications, backup batteries or chargers for assistive devices, and flashlights.

2️⃣ Create a snow and ice removal plan for your home. Make sure pathways, ramps, and entrances stay clear and safe. Talk with neighbors, local services, or caregivers if you need help with this.

3️⃣ Call your utility company to ask about their medical priority or critical care list. If you rely on electricity for medical devices, they may offer advanced outage notifications and other protections.

4️⃣ Inspect and prep ramps, handrails, and entrances before the first frost to prevent slips and ensure accessibility.

It takes more than love and obedience to become a service dog. It takes time, skill, and purpose-driven training — often over the course of 18–24 months. 🐶🎓

Each dog is trained to perform highly specialized tasks tailored to their future handler’s needs, such as:

🔹 Opening doors or retrieving items
🔹 Interrupting panic attacks or night terrors
🔹 Detecting blood sugar changes or seizures
🔹 Providing mobility support and balance assistance

But here’s something most people don’t realize:

🔍 Only about 30–50% of dogs who begin training actually graduate as full-fledged service dogs.

The rest? They're often lovingly referred to as “career change dogs.” These dogs may not meet the exacting standards for service work, but they often go on to become wonderful therapy dogs, emotional support animals, or beloved family pets. 🐾

Training a service dog requires emotional resilience, razor-sharp focus, physical health, and calm under pressure — not every dog is wired for it, and that’s okay.

🎓 Every successful service dog represents years of effort, care, and expertise. The impact they make is lifelong.

Today is International Equal Pay Day — a reminder that equal work deserves equal pay, no matter who you are. 💼💪

Yet, people with disabilities continue to face significant wage gaps, discrimination, and outdated policies that undervalue their skills and contributions. On average, workers with disabilities earn only 66 cents for every dollar earned by workers without disabilities. That’s not equality — that’s injustice.

It’s time to dismantle the barriers and demand pay equity for all, including those with disabilities. Because talent has no limits. Because dignity shouldn’t come with a discount. Because everyone deserves a fair shot — and a fair paycheck.
