Thinking about getting a service dog or training one yourself? Here's what you need to know before starting the journey.
✔️ Start with the right dog.
Not every dog is suited for service work. Breeds like Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, and Border Collies are traditionally used because of their intelligence, trainability, and calm demeanor.
That said, any breed can be appropriate if the dog is calm, intelligent, and eager to learn. The key is choosing a puppy with the right temperament for the work they'll be doing.
✔️ Training takes time and expertise.
Service dogs typically require 18–24 months of dedicated training to reliably perform the tasks their handler needs. Only about 30–50% of dogs that start training actually graduate. The rest may become therapy animals or “career change” pets.
✔️ Considering self-training? You don’t have to do it alone.
Many handlers choose to train their own service dog with guidance from a professional dog trainer. Most modern trainers use positive reinforcement techniques, helping you build a clear, consistent plan to teach and reward specific service behaviors.
