Building Awareness. Breaking Stigma in the Workplace.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month — a time to learn more about epilepsy, support inclusion, and break the stigma surrounding this common neurological condition, which affects more than 3.4 million Americans.

Creating an inclusive and supportive workplace helps employees with epilepsy thrive while promoting safety, understanding, and belonging for everyone.

Here are a few ways employers can help:

👩‍⚕️ Offer flexibility for medical appointments or rest after a seizure.

🔦 Identify and reduce potential seizure triggers such as flickering lights or stress.

🚑 Train managers and coworkers on seizure first aid and response.

💭 Foster open communication so employees feel comfortable discussing their needs.

When we build awareness, we replace fear with knowledge. When we build inclusion, we replace barriers with opportunity.

This , let’s continue building awareness and breaking stigma together.

Giving Tuesday is just around the corner, and we’re gearing up for one of the most important giving moments of the year.

As a small nonprofit, we rely deeply on end-of-year giving. It strengthens our programs, sustains our mission, and ensures we can continue serving people with disabilities in the year ahead.

This year, your support matters more than ever. Despite nearly $120,000 in state budget cuts, we are not reducing services or turning anyone away. But to keep our programs strong and accessible for every person who needs us, community support is essential.

All money raised this Giving Tuesday will directly support our Youth Services programming — primarily our Summer Work Program, which provides hands-on, real-world work experience to youth with disabilities throughout Ottawa and Allegan Counties. Your generosity helps local young people build confidence, gain job skills, and prepare for meaningful futures.

Your gift has a direct and lasting impact and helps keep the future funded. Every dollar helps people with disabilities access the resources, support, and opportunities they need to live the independent lives they choose. Your support doesn’t just fund programs — it fuels leadership, empowerment, and belonging.

If you believe in a community where everyone can participate, contribute, and belong, this is a vital moment to give.

Donate today: https://ow.ly/MCCo50XtyMG

Stay tuned for Giving Tuesday — we’ll also be launching our Holiday Storefront with DNL branded merchandise, including hand-knit hats, bracelets, apparel, greeting cards, and more. Check back next week to be among the first to shop!

New Survey Opportunity: To***co Use in Michigan Adults with Disabilities

The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services To***co Control Program are inviting adults with disabilities to take part in an important statewide survey.

The goal is to better understand to***co use and the general experiences of adults with disabilities — including those who have never used to***co. Your input will help ensure that health resources and quitting tools are accessible, relevant, and effective for everyone.

Eligibility: Adults (18+) with one or more disabilities who live in Michigan — whether or not they use to***co — are welcome to participate.

Bonus: Participants can enter a prize drawing at the end of the survey!

Building Awareness. Breaking Stigma.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month — a time to learn, share, and take action to support the 3.4 million Americans living with epilepsy. One of the most important ways to help is by knowing what to do if someone has a seizure.

✅ Stay calm and time the seizure.
✅ Gently guide the person to the ground and clear the area of hazards.
✅ Turn them onto their side after the seizure stops to keep their airway clear.
🚫 Do not put anything in their mouth.
🚫 Do not restrain them.

Most seizures last only a few minutes, and with calm, informed action, you can help ensure the person’s safety until the seizure ends naturally.

When we educate ourselves, we replace fear with understanding — and that’s how we build awareness and break stigma.

Building Awareness. Breaking Stigma.

Epilepsy affects more than 3.4 million people in the United States, yet many still face stigma and misunderstanding.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurrent, unprovoked seizures — sudden surges of electrical activity in the brain that can affect movement, awareness, behavior, or senses. It can develop at any age and looks different for everyone.

While there’s no single cure, many people manage epilepsy successfully with treatment options such as:

💊 Medication to help control seizures
⚡ Surgery or neurostimulation devices for certain cases
🧘 Lifestyle changes and identifying seizure triggers
🤝 Support networks and education for individuals and families

With awareness, understanding, and access to care, people with epilepsy can lead full, active lives.

This , let’s continue building awareness and breaking stigma — through compassion, inclusion, and education.
