“Antibiotics Aren’t the Answer to Every Illness — Here’s Why”

At TeleMeMD, we’re often asked why antibiotics aren’t prescribed for every illness that causes fever, cough, sore throat, or fatigue. The answer comes down to biology: viruses and bacteria are completely different organisms, and antibiotics only work on one of them.

Viruses behave like tiny code-breakers. They slip inside your cells and use your own machinery to multiply. Antibiotics can’t reach them there. From the ER to TeleMeMD

Years in the ER taught me to move fast and look for the story beneath every crisis. Over time I realized many “emergencies” weren’t sudden at all—they were the result of delayed appointments, transportation issues, and the frustration of trying to access care in a busy system.

I didn’t leave Emergency Medicine; I followed what it showed me. If we reach people earlier and make care easier to access, we prevent a lot of those crises from ever happening.
That’s what led me to house calls and telehealth. Today, mobile diagnostics, high-quality video visits, and rapid communication make it possible to deliver meaningful care without the waiting room. Patients get seen quickly and in the comfort of their own space.
