“With students everywhere returning to school, families are reminded just how big transitions can feel—for both children and parents…

One of the most common challenges children experience during times of change is separation anxiety. While it’s most visible at school drop-offs, separation anxiety can arise in many different contexts. The good news is that with patience, consistency, and support, children can build resilience and confidence in navigating new experiences.”

Today on the blog, Cascade based therapist Kristi Kinzler, MA, LPC offers some reflections and practical tips on how to navigate separation anxiety and transitions for both kids and parents alike!

“Addiction and dopamine go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean your story is written in stone. Our brains are adaptable. They can change, heal, and grow. With the right support, tools, and patience, we can reclaim our ability to feel joy and purpose in healthier, more sustainable ways.”

Today on the blog, Holland based therapist Kyle Boer, LMSW, MDiv, CAADC explores the brain’s reward trap.

Meet Claire!

Claire Blystra is a Limited Licensed Counselor
working at our Holland South office. She believes that although relationships can be the source of great pain, they are also the key to healing. The therapeutic space provides a warm, safe space to curiously and vulnerably explore not only ourselves but also the impacts of our relationships.

Claire earned a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from Hope College. She employs a collaborative, strengths-based approach in her work with clients. Claire has experience working with both adults and children experiencing challenges including trauma, PTSD, relationship concerns, mood disorders, parenting, and life transitions.

We’re excited to welcome MomsBloom to our Holland South office for a special evening of connection and community. 🌿

For the past three years, MomsBloom has been walking alongside families in Ottawa County during the tender postpartum season — and now, their work is growing faster than ever. This event is a chance to celebrate that growth, hear stories of impact, and discover how you can be part of the village.

You’ll enjoy light refreshments, creative experiences like henna art, cookie decorating, and permanent jewelry, plus a raffle featuring gifts from some of our favorite local businesses.

Whether you’ve been a longtime supporter or are just getting to know MomsBloom, we’d love for you to join us!

Today, we have two introductions to make!

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Anna Clawson to the Leadlight team — both as a clinician and as the new Site Supervisor for our Holland North office!

Anna is a compassionate and empathetic therapist specializing in children and adolescents (ages 5 and up). With a background in both education and mental health, she provides trauma-informed, culturally responsive care tailored to each child’s unique strengths. Her specialties include play therapy, autism, ADHD, neurodivergence, school-related concerns, anxiety, depression, and parenting support.

As Site Supervisor, Anna will help expand our child and adolescent services on the lakeshore. She is currently accepting new clients and seeing them at our Holland South office (located in Baker Lofts) — and we’re excited to have her help us open Holland North this August! Stay tuned for more updates!

We’re grateful for the expertise, heart, and leadership Anna brings to both her clients and our team.

Welcome, Anna and welcome Holland North!

“When adults imagine telling children about someone they love dying, we often carry all of our adult fears and grief with us, and place them like an overlay on top of our children - chastising them when they laugh, thinking something is wrong with them when they play chase at the funeral, fearing that they are too young to understand death.

As a child life specialist and social worker who specializes in child and adolescent therapy, I am grateful to see children play in the midst of death. I know that play is the language of children: it is how they communicate, how they process, and how they regulate their nervous systems.”

Today on the blog Cascade based therapist Jen Armstrong shares a tender story as well as practical steps of how you can engage the topic of death with children.

Meet Michelle!

We are thrilled to officially introduce our previous clinical intern turned therapist, Michelle Andrews MA, LLC. Michelle did her clinical internship with us at the Cascade office and now has officially joined the team! We are thrilled to continue to have her around.

In her therapy room she seeks to create a safe and trusting counseling relationship with both the child and the caregivers. She utilizes play and art interventions to help teach coping skills to children. You will find that she also draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and attachment theory to help improve child and family mental health. She embraces that every child and family is unique and adjusts her approaches based on the child’s developmental age and the family’s specific needs.

Michelle has immediate openings, so reach out through hello@leadlightcounseling.com or through the website to get scheduled!
