🧠 Fact or Myth: Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

Myth: People with SUD just need stronger willpower to quit.

Fact: SUD is a medical condition that changes how the brain works. These changes lead to intense cravings and can impair decision-making, making quitting extremely difficult without support. Treatment, therapy, sometimes medication, and strong social support are often necessary for recovery.

💡 Additional Info / Why This Matters:

Believing the willpower myth stigmatizes people with SUD and can discourage them from seeking help.

Fun Friday Staff Highlight: Traci Scott, LLMSW, CAADC-DP – Men's Residential Clinician

Today, we're excited to spotlight Traci Scott at the Chester A. Ray Center! Traci began her journey with us as a clinician in the Grand Haven outpatient office. She went on to contribute her skills at our Women’s Residential program at Harbor House before settling into her current role as a clinician in Men’s Residential.

Traci earned her Master’s in Social Work (clinical concentration in Substance Use Disorders) from Western Michigan University in June 2023.

Her LLMSW designation—licensed master's social worker with limited practice under supervision—is complemented by her CAADC-DP (Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor – Development Plan), a time-limited phase designed to help professionals gain required supervised experience toward full certification.

Traci passionately believes that people experiencing substance use or mental health challenges deserve to be heard and live life to the fullest. She hopes to help “one or two people find hope they may not have otherwise.” Outside of work, she loves spending time watching sports with her husband and daughter, reading, and learning how to paint.

Traci’s Story (in her own words):
“Working with those in the recovery community has been a blessing for me. Yes, there are stories of heartbreak and sadness, but I also get to witness clients grow in strength, hope, and forgiveness. My hope for those who come into treatment is that they find a safe space—where they are not judged for their decisions or company. We ALL are flawed and find ways to cope with life’s stressors. I am humbled not only to guide people toward recovery, but to help them see their own worth.

Traci, we deeply appreciate your courage in sharing your journey so openly. Your vulnerability and your unwavering commitment to sowing hope truly inspire everyone around you.
