Raise your hand 🖐 if you’ve been hunched over your computer too much this week? This summer?

We’ve chatted before about the importance of good posture, effects bad posture has on potential neck and back pain.

This is an easy and great exercise to help reverse that hunching, engaging the back body musculature, helping you maintain better posture for longer periods of time. If our musculoskeletal system is balanced, our bodies feel good. The minute we spend too much time hunched over a computer, we start to get tight in our front (pectoralis muscles) and weak in our back muscles (lower trapezius and rhomboids), leading to pain.

This gentle exercise targets both the front of your body to stretch the pectoralis and strengthen the back body. It’s easy enough to try throughout your work day:
✔️ Squeeze your shoulder blades as you get your arms into the start position.
✔️ Focus on keeping those shoulder blades squeezing as you gently raise and lower your arms against the wall or door, only raising as far as either your shoulder range of motion allows or your back remains against the wall.
✔️ Repeat 10 times, at least 2 different times during your work day.

The 80/20 RULE

🌟 A great reminder as we check in with our progress of the goals we set for ourselves…

Many of us may already know about the 80/20 principle. However, have you ever tried to apply to your general health?

▫️If you can apply 80% of your energy to being “good” for your general health every day, you will see results. This can mean getting the proper amount of sleep, getting in a workout, eating well, drinking water, etc. The list goes on and on.

▫️As healthcare practitioners, we know the general psychology of typical humans. We know that most of us will only be “good” 80% of the time. With that knowledge, we prescribe exercises that even if performed 50% of the time, will still get you results. Strength, flexibility, muscular coordination. These all take time and practice to master and see performance results.

🔹So be patient with yourself. Do the work. But don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day of your exercises, or don’t drink enough water one day, or stay up too late finishing the work for that deadline. Being “good” 80% of the time still works!

Movement Monday 💪🏽
One of the most important movements we do every day is the squat. Whether you're at the gym, picking something up at home, or just getting out of a chair — squatting is part of daily life.
Do you notice your lower back rounding — what we often call a "butt wink"? These can be signs of a few underlying issues:
🔹️Limited ankle mobility
🔹️Inadequate hip internal rotation
🔹️Poor hip flexion mechanics
As we age, maintaining proper form and mobility becomes even more important to prevent injury and move well.
A simple way to improve squat form as seen: elevate your heels. This can help compensate for limited ankle mobility and allow more stable squat position.

❔So, why does EnduraFit offer yoga? What’s the connection to fitness?

❕This. This right here, along with MANY different poses. This “chair pose” is a functional squat. (The position we should all be using when bending to reach the bottom cabinet in your kitchen, doing those epic weeding of the garden… Ok, just minus the arms overhead of course!) We are all about the functionality of movement at EnduraFit and focus on proper form and technique of such.

The crossover between physical therapy, strength training, and yoga is incredible. There’s an element and importance to three aspects all these disciplines focus on: strength, flexibility, and form. At EnduraFit, you can find the discipline (or combination) that works for you.

And you don’t have to be a yoga master to perform poses like these. Our classes welcome all abilities. Always. With an instructor who is happy to teach proper form and technique.

THERAPY THURSDAY

So, we heard you’ve got a little twinge in your knee. And it’s really starting to bug you. Don’t worry. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re headed to the operating room. There are a lot of potential causes for that pain. AND most of them won’t require surgery.

1️⃣One of the first questions a physical therapist will as you is, “where in your knee is the pain?” It helps point us in a direction of potential cause.

2️⃣The second question we ask is, “what does it feel like?” Certain causes have certain symptoms. Sharp pain, dull ache, catching feeling, etc.

3️⃣The third question we often ask is, “do you remember doing something to cause the initial pain?” Knowing the potential mechanism of injury is important to pinpoint the cause.

💡Physical therapists are masters of patterns. Certain potential causes of pain typically have a similar pattern in their presentation, intensity and mechanism. And it’s our job to identify the cause of your pain and devise a plan to improve your function and quality of life. That’s it! That’s all physical therapy is. PT does NOT stand for Pain and Torture or Physical Terrorist. We promise!

So, that knee that’s bugging you... Is it your medial meniscus at fault? Or perhaps a quad tendinitis? Or maybe even the dreaded IT Band syndrome? No matter the cause, we’re here to help.

Last week was National Cancer Survivor Day!

🧡Today, June 11, 10 years ago, Chris was suddenly diagnosed with cancer - an aggressive form of leukemia. However, after a hard fought battle with chemo and eventually a stem cell transplant, he is a survivor!

💚It’s because of that experience that EnduraFit became a reality. Life is too short to keep putting big life goals on the back burner.

🖤It’s also why we started our new business, Strongcology. A chance to give the gift of wellness and strength to all those warriors out there. (You can read more about it here: https://endurafittraining.com/strongcology )

🩶Sending our family, friends, community members and all strangers who have battled this disease a huge high five and a celebratory hug. To all those still fighting or who have gained their wings, we send you and even bigger high five and hug! A beautiful day to celebrate a beautiful you.
