Springtime and summer get busy. Family time is so important.

🗓️ Our summer yoga hours start THIS Saturday, April 25… No Saturday yoga classes, Wednesday classes only until October.

We will continue to offer our amazing Wednesday, 6pm class. Come join us. $15 per class, drop ins only. All abilities always welcome.

News Flash!! 📢

Those chronically tight hamstrings you’ve been dealing with forever... they may not actually be tight. They’re most likely being OVERUSED!

This is a very common issue we see in both the personal training and physical therapy world. Many clients report having chronic hamstring pain and issues. When further assessed, we find that it’s not just a simple issue of tightness. It’s often tight and/or weak hip flexors, weak lower abdominals and weak glutes.

So, don’t just stretch your hamstrings. Strengthen your glutes and core. Not sure which exercises might be best for you? Drop us a message. We’d be happy to chat!

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY:
The many benefits of hydration

☀️ As it heats up a little (finally!) here in New England, this is your friendly reminder to plan ahead and hydrate! 💧

❔Do you drink enough water?
This is a question we ask our clients on a regular basis. Studies show that in order to maintain proper hydration, we should be drinking roughly half of our body weight in ounces. Yes, you read that right. Half of your body weight in ounces!

Now, you’re probably thinking… “if I drink that much, I’m going to be peeing all day long!”
The answer is, yes, at first you will be in the bathroom quite a bit. However, as your body adjusts, it will get better.

As you increase your water intake, you may notice some of its benefits, such as:
💧improved mood
💧better recovery
💧improved sleep
💧feeling fuller
💧better skin
💧decreased skin and muscle tightness
💧decreased bloating

QUICK TIP:
If you’re just not a fan of H2O, try adding some flavor like lemon slices, cucumber, mint, orange slices or even all natural seltzer water (no artificial flavors).

THERAPY THURSDAY

Ever heard of UPPER CROSSED SYNDROME? Maybe not, but no doubt you’ve heard of a neck hump or can recognize that nagging neck pain when trying to bring your head more upright after those hours spent over your laptop.

With so many of us with less than ideal set ups for our home offices, upper crossed syndrome has set in.

The more we’re sitting over our laptops, sitting comfortably on our couches, slouched over the myriad of house projects, the more we settle into a hunched posture: rounded shoulders and forward head.

The more often we slouch, the tighter the front of our body gets (our pectoralis and anterior neck muscles) and the looser and more stretched out our back muscles (latisimus dorsi, lower trapezius, rhomboids) get. This muscular imbalance, if left untreated will lead to pain and more permanent postural changes.

So, how do we reverse this curve? By simple exercises such as this UPPER BODY WALL SLIDE:
🔹 Stand up against a wall with your entire back as flat against the wall as possible. Your knees will need to be bent with your feet away from the wall.
🔹 Start with your arms in a “goal post” position with as much of your arms against the wall as possible.
🔹 While squeezing your shoulder blades together, slowly raise your arms up toward the ceiling in a wide position, keeping them against the wall.
🔹 Slowly return to your starting position.
🔹 Repeat 10-12 times for a total of 3 sets per day.

A fairly quick and easy exercise that is safe to perform daily. Rebalance those muscles, your posture and reverse that curve!

Please remember to always respect your body’s capabilities and DO NOT push through any pain. However, some stretching and muscular “work” is to be expected.

Breathing is important. Yes, wellness can be that simple. Breathing recycles our oxygen, providing life to our tissues (muscles, fascia, skin), allowing us to move freely.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY:

Let’s chat about the importance of SLEEP. 💤

Why is it so important?

Without the proper sleep, our bodies don’t heal well, we stay in a state of stress where our organs don’t function well either (including our brains - hello, parents!). All the best nutrition and exercise routines in the world will not work without restorative sleep.

So, what can we do about it?

💤 Establish a sleep routine - similar bedtimes everyday

💤 Get some sun - Vitamin D is important to our overall health

💤 Eat well - it doesn’t have to be perfect, just healthy with less sugar

💤 Get active - nothing crazy, but some regular and routine movement

💤 Find your sleep zone - relaxation and the best sleeping temperature for you

Chris and Jake are certified Nutrition Coaches. Part of their training is developing healthy habits, a behavioral approach. And sleep is always the first thing they address with clients. If you’re feeling like you need a little help with these aspects, Nutrition Coaching can be added on to any personal training package.
