Avoiding a Different Way

“If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.” — Epictetus

Avoid doing it differently.
Don’t be creative.

We already have it figured out.

Doing old things
New ways
Is difficult.

It takes time.
More effort.

The creative process brings
Patience
Frustration
Failure.

It never works the first time.

This is what the Avoider would tell us.

But if we avoid innovation
How do we grow
Learn
Create
Or improve?

Watch a child play.

No fear.
No rules.
Just creation.

There is a better way of doing everything we’re doing.

Don’t let the Avoider hold us back.
Create.

“Do not assume that what you desire will come to pass. Examine impressions carefully.” — Epictetus

The Avoider would have us look straight ahead.
Eyes down.
Single path.

It avoids possibility.
New paths.
Information.
Ideas.
Beliefs.

Exploring is uncomfortable.
It risks being wrong.
It reveals things have changed.
It forces us to consider another point of view.

So the Avoider says nothing needs to be explored.
That we already know.
There is safety in certainty.

But no growth.
Understanding.
Resolution.

Monster of Our Own Making - Why Avoiding Make Matters Worse

“While we are postponing, life speeds by.” — Seneca

The Avoider promises
A happier life
An easier life
A less stressful life

If we simply avoid the hard things.

Conflict
Resistance
Tasks
Projects
Lifelong dreams

Seemingly
The more important it is
The more we avoid.

The Avoider shows up fast.
Avoidance looks like control.
Perfection.
Worry.
Switching tasks.
Pleasing someone else.

It keeps us from
Focusing
Starting
Finishing

Avoiding does not remove the problem.
It feeds it in the dark.
Allows it to grow into a monster.

Pause.
Ask what you are avoiding.

**Don’t feed the Monster.**

Yet Here We Are – Choosing How We Show Up When Conditions Aren’t Ideal

“Do not seek for events to happen as you wish, but wish for events to happen as they do happen.” — Epictetus

Yet here we are.
We didn’t mean for this to happen.
We didn’t plan for this.

We’re tired.
Sore.
Cold.
It’s raining.
We’d rather not.

Even if this is not of our doing, here we are.

Work needs done.
Conversations need had.
Meetings will happen.
Responsibilities don’t go away.
Obligations were made to be honored.

We might not have chosen to be here.
Yet here we are.

“We begin to lose our hesitation to do immoral things when we lose our hesitation to do hurried things.” — Musonius Rufus

We move fast.
From one thing
To the next
To the next.

Life becomes hurried.
A rush.
A race.

Our mind outpaces our body.
We’re on to what’s next mentally
Before we’re even there physically.

It’s hard to enjoy where we are.
What we’re doing.
Who we’re with.

Because we’re not really there.

Slow the body.
Slow the pace.

Be here.

“A thatched roof once covered free men; under marble and gold dwells slavery” — Seneca

The hunger of more is never satisfied.
It wants more of what we don’t have.
It wants better versions of the things we already have.
Always on to the next thing.

It doesn’t rest
Or allow us peace.

The more we want
The less present we are
With what we have,
Who we’re with,
What we’re doing.

Look around you.
Do you need more?
Is what you have enough?

Once you had enough
What has more ever done for you?

We don’t need more.
We have everything we need right now.

We could have more of what matters.

Time spent with the ones we love
Experiences
Knowledge
Skills
Connection.

Take a long moment.
Think of your greatest memories.
Seek more of that.

Three Paths – Choosing What You Carry Forward

“Do not wish for events to happen as you want them to, but rather want them to happen as they do, and your life will go well.” — Cleanthes

The paths are laid before us.
We decide which to walk.
And for how long.

Nothing goes as planned.
People disappoint.
Circumstances resist.

How we move forward,
and what we carry with us,
is a choice.

Stay miserable.
Accept and move on.
Or turn the obstacle into opportunity.

Choose your path.
Choose what you carry.

Be the Boxer - Self-Mastery as Training for Life’s Opponents

“Man conquers the world by conquering himself.” — Zeno of Citium

Life presents constant opponents.
People.
Conflict.
Frustration.
Perfection.
Judgment.

Every day, one shows up with energy, a voice, a vote.
Unchecked, it pulls at emotions, controls reactions, and spills onto others.

Or it becomes a sparing partner.

The fencer needs a sword.
The boxer only needs their fist.

The practice of Self-Mastery makes us the boxer.
Trained.
Always ready.

Be ready.
Be the boxer

The Teachings of Pain - Why We Keep Repeating the Same Patterns

“No one is wise by chance.” — Seneca

If we were to hit our head on the same log, stub our toe on the same curb, or watch a child repeatedly hurt themselves in the same way, we would wonder why they weren’t learning.

But we do this to ourselves every day.

Not with broken bones.
With frustration.
Anxiety.
Anger.
Guilt.
Resentment.

They are not painful enough to stop us.
So we repeat them.

The same conversations.
The same wasted time.
The same patterns.

Learning does not happen by chance.
It takes intention.
Attention.
A willingness to be taught.

Pain is the spotlight showing what needs to change.

Catch the Drift

We don’t fail all at once.
We drift.

Autopilot only takes us where it always has.
The system is outdated.

Consistent manual override is needed.

Drift isn’t failure unless it goes uncorrected.
It’s feedback.

Notice the drift.
Take the controls.
Correct course.
Repeat.
Reprogram.

Restlessness, Inaction in Action

“Nothing is so conducive to clear judgment as the ability to stop.” — Seneca

The final crescendo of the Restless.

The Restless has already rushed past
Showing empathy through understanding
Exploration by being curious
Innovation through generative creativity
Navigation by finding what is important.

The Restless has gone right to action.
Pushing through and over everything meaningful.

The actions of the Restless are not well thought.
They are just done.

The Restless did not choose the wisest or the best path.
It did not even discover most of the paths.
It did not take advice from those who would have helped us.
It only considered doing.
And then doing the next thing.

The Restless leads to inaction through action.
It will have to go back.
Do it again.
Repair.
Make amends.
Or go it alone.

The Restless is a mover.
Energy.
Motion.

We can harness the Restless.
Keep it focused.
Keep it on the path.

The Restless in control is our superpower.

The Distracted Navigator

“He who is everywhere is nowhere.” — Seneca

The navigator is supposed to get us to the final destination.
They are supposed to know what is important along the journey.

Urgency pulls attention away from what matters.
Movement replaces direction.

The cost shows up in performance.
In relationships.
In what gets lost along the way.
