Be the Candle that Lights Another.

We are preoccupied in our lives.

Focused on work, responsibilities, goals, and the things that need to get done.

When our thoughts drift inward toward time, performance, and productivity, what gets lost is how we impact others.

The lessons we leave.
The tone we set.
The effect we have.

Leadership is not announced.
It is practiced.

Notice your words.
Your tone.

The silent lessons you leave
One candle can light many.

Time Burrito - in this one we wrap the week all up into one delicious minute.

Time Is Not the Problem

We can’t make more time, but we waste plenty of it.

We rush to talk.
We rush to solve.
We rush to be right.

When we slow down and seek to understand first, we save time, emotion, and energy.
Presence saves time.
Empathy saves time.
Solving the problem instead of a problem saves time.

Choose.

Would we rather they know we’re right, or know that we cared?

We notice how badly we want to talk.
To explain.
To fix.
To be right.

Most people don’t need that from us.
They need us to listen.

Empathy isn’t agreement.
It’s staying quiet long enough for someone to feel heard.

When we do that, trust grows.
The energy and tone of conversations change.

Moving positions becomes easier.

When people feel heard, they are more likely to listen... so listen.

“If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development.” — Aristotle

The Obstacle
We waste time chasing the wrong thing, traveling the wrong path, going on insufficient information or assumptions. We move too quickly. We answer quickly, act fast, judge without consideration. We solve other people’s problems before understanding them. We assume we know the situation, the intent, the motivation, and we go. That impulse to fix, to direct, to correct, steals time, damages trust, and keeps us solving a problem instead of the problem. The obstacle is speed and assumption. Autopilot seldom knows the best path.

The Gift and Opportunity
TABULA RASA

The opportunity is to explore. Be curious. Wander. Explore. Desire to know more, to learn more. Pause, look, listen, learn. Understand where someone is coming from, what they are aiming for, the real why they do and say what they do. Beyond the position lies their aspirations - dig down. The gift is clarity, connection, understanding. The gift is solving the right problem instead of the first problem. Navigating the whole landscape. Build trust through curiosity instead of judgment. Exploration saves time, energy, and frustration. It strengthens relationships. It turns conflict into understanding. It turns assumptions into insight.

The Practice of Self-Mastery
Take a deliberate pause before speaking or acting.

Ask what else we need to know before deciding - what else might be important.

Look for the motivation beneath the surface action - find the aspiration beyond the position.

Explore the entire situation/landscape before choosing a course.

Treat conflict as an opportunity to learn, your differences may be interesting if emotions are controlled.

“To change, you must be willing to be foolish for a moment.”
— Epictetus

The Obstacle
We move through our days on autopilot. We fall into the same routines, the same frustrations, the same reactions. We get annoyed in the same circumstances. We tense up in the same situations. We waste time in the same familiar ways. Even when we know these patterns aren’t helping us, we keep repeating them because they’re predictable. They’re familiar. They worked well enough to get us here, so we rarely question them. The obstacle isn’t the world around us — it’s the narrow, habitual way we move through it.

The Gift and Opportunity
Creativity interrupts the cycle. When we slow down and actually look at our day, we start to see options we’ve ignored. We notice how much of our frustration is self-created. We notice how often we approach people, tasks, and conflicts the exact same way and expect something different. But if we shift our perspective — if we look through the eyes of a child, with curiosity, or through the eyes of an expert, with precision, or through the eyes of someone who knows us well — we find alternatives. We find hidden efficiencies. We find better ways to use our time, better ways to respond, better ways to interact. The gift is the realization that we’re not stuck. The opportunity is to redesign our day so it actually works for us, not against us.

The Practice of Self-Mastery
Notice the routines you fall into without thinking.

Pay attention to the moments that trigger your frustration.

Look at a familiar task and intentionally try a new approach.

When conflict shows up, pause and choose a more creative response.

At the end of the day, review your day and find things you could do differently tomorrow.

Time for Navigation

The Obstacle:
Time is fixed. We don’t get to make more of it. None of us do.
Every day shows up with things we have to do, things we choose to do, and things we don’t want to do but have to do anyway.
The real problem is how much time gets wasted on things that don’t matter — the scrolling, the noise, the habits that eat minutes and turn them into hours.

We move through the day without asking: Does this matter?

Will this matter at the end of the day, the end of the year, or the end of our lives?

Most of the time, the honest answer is no.

The Gift and Opportunity:
We get to navigate our time — we set the course and fly the plane.
At any point in the day, we can stop and ask ourselves if what we’re doing is important.

We can choose not to look at our screens.
We can choose not to bring them to dinner.
We can choose not to replace conversations with our kids, partners, parents, and friends.

We can choose not to be distracted by things that won’t matter at the end of the day.
We can replace all of that with something that will matter — a conversation, workout, meal, or task.

Doing something that adds value to the day, the year, or our life will matter far more than killing time.

Time is what we will all want back at the end of life — why would we choose to kill it now?

We get to choose where our time goes, and when we choose well we create something that matters and become closer to the person we want to be.

The Practice of Self-Mastery:
• Ask throughout the day with any task: Does this matter?
• If it doesn’t matter, stop doing it and replace it with something that does.
• Keep the things that matter at the top of the list, and keep that list very short.
• Give real time and attention to the people who matter.
• End the day by asking: Did what I do matter?

Time for Action

We can’t make more time, but we can do more with the time we have.

Most of us get stuck — overwhelmed, avoiding, controlling, perfecting, worrying. Almost nothing turns out the way we imagine anyway. So break it down. Make it smaller. Start where you can start.

Avoiding never makes the task go away.

Perfection never arrives.
Worry never moves the needle.

Just get started.

Reclaim some of that time.

Be Calm

There’s always something to do. Always noise. Always distraction. Most of us convince ourselves we don’t have the time to slow down.

But calm isn’t found “later.”
Calm is found now.

I used to be restless. Always somewhere else in my head. Those thoughts still come, but they don’t get to stay. Calm comes from one-on-ones — one-on-ones with what I’m doing, where I am, and who I’m with.

A single focus.
A single moment.
That’s enough.

Find your calm.

Want Less to Live More

Desire has an insatiable appetite.
It’s never satisfied.
It always wants more.

More money, more time, bigger house, new car, new phone… more of everything.

The real cost isn’t just money. It’s time. Attention. Energy.
The more we own, the more it owns us.

I think back to the times in life when I was the happiest — childhood, college, early adulthood.
I didn’t have much. Yet everything felt simple, good, enough.

So today’s practice is simple:
Before I chase anything new, I ask myself two questions:
Did I ever really need this?
What will it cost me — not just in dollars, but in time, resources, and attention?

Because the truth is, we sacrifice pieces of our life for every “more” we pursue.

Take a look at your world.
How much of your house, garage, or life could you give away and still be perfectly happy?
How much do you really need?

This is the work today: Wanting less. Living more.

Choose Your Energy

Everything we do carries an energy. And most of the time, it’s one of two powers: love or fear.

Love makes things easy and charges.

Fear makes things heavy and drains.

Not starting because it won’t be perfect?
Avoiding a person or a conversation?
Putting off tasks you don’t want to do?
Fear.

Flip it.
Get creative.
Make it smaller.
Decide “good enough.”
Choose empathy.
Lead with curiosity.

When the energy changes, you change.

Choose your energy today.
