Collaboration builds safer communities.

Recently, Memorial Hospital Miramar partnered with the Miramar Police Department (Miramar Police Department) SWAT team for a joint training exercise designed to enhance preparedness and strengthen coordination between hospital security and law enforcement.

By providing access to our facility for real-world training, we are helping officers become familiar with the hospital layout and protocols. This ensures a faster, safer, and more effective response if an emergency ever arises.

Together, we are investing in safety, readiness, and the well-being of our community.

Meet Jenelle.

At just 21 years old, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, right around her birthday.

“What started as a small lump turned out to be something I never expected at my age,” she shared. “Everything happened so fast, scans, tests, chemo, radiation, it was a whirlwind.”

Now 22 and cancer-free, Jenelle completed her treatment this January and is using her story to inspire others. “If I can do it, anyone can,” she says. “Trust your body, check yourself, and never lose hope.”

Jenelle reminds us all that strength, courage, and early detection save lives. 💙 Read more about Jenelle by heading to the link: https://www.mhs.net/patient-stories/2025/10/jenelles-breast-cancer-story-of-strength-survival-and-power-of-early-detection

Art can be used to express emotions, explore thoughts and feelings, and build self-awareness. It can also be a way to connect with others and strengthen the community. That is the goal at Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health’s Rebels Drop-In Center, where the stigma of mental health is left behind. 💙

Open 365 days a year, the Rebels Drop-In Center provides social support, advocacy, and peer counseling for adults navigating mental health or substance use challenges. Through art, group activities, and community resources, participants find healing, connection, and new purpose. 🎨

At our annual Easel on Fire event, the artwork created by our participants took center stage, transforming the space into a celebration of creativity and recovery. Guests, including Elizabeth Justen, Chair of the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, and Brad Friedman, Commissioner of the South Broward Hospital District, joined us to admire the incredible pieces and connect with the artists behind them. 🖼️

“Many of our participants had never picked up a paintbrush before coming here,” said Claudia Vicencio, Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services at Memorial Healthcare System. “They discover that art becomes something truly therapeutic, helping them work through anxiety, depression, and other challenges in a safe, supportive environment.”

Events like Easel on Fire remind us that healing can take many forms, and sometimes, it begins with a brushstroke. 🖌️

For those living with depression that hasn’t improved with medication or therapy, there’s still hope.

When traditional treatments no longer bring relief, it’s called treatment-resistant depression. That’s where TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy can help. 🩺

TMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain that control mood. Over time, these pulses help “retrain” brain activity, reducing symptoms like loss of motivation, changes in sleep, and feelings of worthlessness.

“Medication wasn’t working. Everything that I was doing was giving a little bit of help, but I was still feeling that I wanted to die. I knew how I was going to do it. I felt that every day for about 18 months, so I had nothing to lose with trying TMS,” says one patient who completed treatment. “The key was not to change anything, so we could truly tell that it was the TMS working. So everything stayed the same, meds, everything. By my eighth session, the wanting to die and thinking about su***de lifted. I was able to get some sleep, and I was feeling the spark in me start to wake up because it was like trapped in concrete.”

“There’s always hope,” says Dr. Jose Guerra, Psychiatrist at Memorial Behavioral Health. “If whatever you’re doing doesn’t work, there are always different things we can try. TMS is one of those new technologies that’s helping many people, and we’re confident it will continue to help those in our community.”

Each session lasts about 45 minutes, with 15 to 20 minutes of active treatment where a small device is placed on the head. Most patients stay awake, feel no pain, and can immediately return to their day afterward. Treatment typically includes around 30 sessions, done several times a week, while patients continue their regular medications and therapy for the best results.

Dr. Guerra adds, “I think it’s a great opportunity that we have this to offer as an additional treatment for depression for those in our community who haven’t had the greatest benefit from conventional medication regimens.”

Clean paws, safe halls 🐾

Today we showed our pups how important it is to keep hands (and paws) clean. Studies show a 20-second wash with soap can remove about 90% of germs.

On this Global Handwashing Day, Goldie, Freedom, and Honey Crisp are ready to spread lots of love... and fewer germs! 🫶

Every eight minutes, someone new is added to the national transplant waitlist. Right now, more than 100,000 Americans are waiting and each day, 13 people die without receiving the organ they need.

At Memorial Transplant Institute, we’ve seen the lifesaving power of organ donation through patients like Ayva Grace, who is thriving after her transplant, and others whose lives have been renewed thanks to the generosity of donors.

We encourage everyone to learn the facts about organ donation and consider registering, because one “yes” can change countless lives!

Breast Medical Oncologist Dr. Alejandra Ergle reminds us that breast cancer isn’t always about family history.

The biggest risk factor is simply being a woman with breast tissue, which is why screening is so important for everyone.

Dr. Ergle shares that healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and limiting alcohol can help reduce risk.

But the most powerful tool we have is early detection through screening. 🏥🩺

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take Dr. Ergle’s advice: screening saves lives.
