“I love seeing kids come in not feeling well and then rebound so quickly,” says Amanda, a night-shift nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “Before they leave, they’ll give you a big hug, and knowing I brightened their day is such an amazing feeling.” ❤️

Amanda always knew she wanted to work with kids. “I dabbled between teaching and occupational therapy, but I was always drawn to helping children. Seeing how important nurses were to my grandparents showed me how impactful this career could be.”

Since starting her nursing journey, Amanda has been dedicated to making the Pediatric ER a place where kids and families feel supported. From turning IVs into “little mosquito bites” to singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” on the way to scans, she uses creativity and compassion to guide young patients through stressful moments.

Her favorite part of the job? “Being there for kids and their families during both tough and happy moments. Their resilience and the gratitude they show reminds me every day why I do this work.”

Amanda also leans on her team to stay calm and focused in the fast-paced ER. “Knowing I have my colleagues by my side, taking deep breaths, and trusting in our teamwork helps me handle any situation,” she says.

Today, we celebrate a Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital legend, the incomparable Lotsy Dotsy. ❤️

For decades, Lotsy has filled our halls with laughter, light, and the kind of love that heals in ways medicine alone cannot. Her red nose, bright smile, and boundless heart have comforted thousands of children, and one of those children was Zoe.

For six years, Zoe was part of our oncology family. Through treatments, hospital stays, and long days of uncertainty, she found friendship, comfort, and joy in Lotsy. To Zoe, Lotsy wasn’t just someone who made her laugh, she was family. Every year, Zoe and her parents made it a point to celebrate Lotsy’s birthday with balloons, flowers, singing, and dancing!

This year was no different. Although Zoe wasn’t physically here to celebrate, her incredible parents stood in her place, sharing hugs, laughter, and love, just as Zoe always did. ✨

In that moment, we were reminded that what we do here isn’t just about treatment or care, it’s about connection. It’s about bonds that go beyond hospital walls and far beyond a diagnosis.

Happy Birthday, Lotsy Dotsy, the best is yet to come. 🫶

Some of the nation’s top high school football programs and athletes recently hit the field at the 4th annual Broward County National High School Football Showcase presented by the Broward Education Foundation. 🏈

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital [U18] Sports Medicine was proud to serve as the official medical provider for this year’s event, continuing our commitment to keeping student-athletes safe, active, and thriving.

From providing physicians and athletic trainers on the sidelines to leading pre-game Medical Time Outs with referees, fire rescue, and team staff, our team ensures everyone is prepared to respond in an emergency. As Tony Milian, MBA Senior Director of Pediatric Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation & Neurosciences at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, says:

“Medical time outs are a simple but important aspect of emergency management… this level of communication ensures all parties are ready to work in concert with one another during a medical emergency. A simple step that goes a long way in saving lives.”

Over three days, Broward County athletes faced off against powerhouse programs from across the country, showcasing why South Florida continues to be a hotbed of football talent.

We’re proud to provide athletic trainers and physicians not only for this showcase but also for all 29 Broward County high schools, covering every sporting event, every season, every year. Because at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, student-athlete safety will always be the number one priority.

We’re proud to announce that our Pediatric Residents are the new FCAAP Brain Bowl State Champions! ✨

The Brain Bowl is a fast-paced, jeopardy-style competition at the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) Annual Meeting where the Florida Pediatric Residency Programs battle to take the crown.

This year, our amazing team of Maria Fiallo (PGY3), Chantelle White (PGY3), Sa’rah McNeely (PGY3), and D’Anna Edwards (PGY2), showed exceptional knowledge and teamwork, bringing the title home to Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital!

This isn’t just a patient story. This is one of our own. ✨

Dr. Christina Ortega, a neuropsychologist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital who works with children battling cancer, never imagined she’d be facing her own diagnosis, especially while pregnant.

At just 34 years old, healthy, and with no family history, Dr. Ortega found a lump shortly after weaning her first son. She was 19 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with HER2+ stage 2B breast cancer.

Under the care of Dr. Atif Hussein and the multidisciplinary team at Memorial Cancer Institute, Christina was able to continue her pregnancy while receiving life-saving treatment. Her care plan was coordinated across specialties, showing the impact of oncology-led, team-based care.

She underwent a double mastectomy and has now been off treatment for three years. Next month, her daughter, the baby she was carrying during her diagnosis, will celebrate her 6th birthday on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

Dr. Ortega is sharing her story to raise awareness about pregnancy-associated breast cancer, a rare but serious condition that is often misdiagnosed or delayed because symptoms are mistaken for normal pregnancy changes.

If you're pregnant or postpartum and notice changes in your breasts, speak up. Early detection can save lives, just like it saved hers.

Today we celebrated our NICU graduates in the Teammates for Kids Child Life Zone at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as part of NICU Awareness Month. Families reunited with the neonatologists, nurses, and surgeons who guided them through those earliest days.

From babies born extremely premature to little ones who overcame complex surgeries, every day they remind us why Level IV Wasie NICU care matters.

Here’s to brighter days, healthier tomorrows, and the tiny warriors who became BIG miracles! 🎓❤️
