People often assume the foster care system protects children.
But the reality is far more painful.
According to the National Foster Youth Institute, advocates estimate that around 60% of child sex-trafficking survivors were once involved in the child-welfare system — including foster care, group homes, and residential placements.
Let that sink in.
A system designed to keep children safe is producing some of the most vulnerable victims.
This isn’t a coincidence.
It’s a warning.
• instability creates vulnerability
• disconnected children become targets
• lack of consistent adult protection opens the door to exploitation
• kids who run from unsafe placements are often preyed upon within days
The numbers don’t lie — but they do expose something we must confront:
Children aren’t slipping through the cracks.
They’re being pushed through them.
If we want to prevent trafficking, we must start where the pipeline begins:
the child-welfare system itself.
