On Maternal Health Awareness Day, we honor the reality of pregnancy and early parenthood, a time that can bring excitement, uncertainty, and everything in between. Every family deserves support that meets them where they are.

Through WIC, Nurse-Family Partnership, and NJ InCK, families receive nutrition guidance, one-on-one nurse support, and coordinated care during pregnancy and the early years of a child’s life.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early.

Through our Cancer Education and Early Detection program, individuals can be connected to education, screenings, and early detection services. Eligible individuals may qualify for no-cost cervical cancer screenings, including Pap testing and HPV co-testing. Taking steps early can help protect long-term health.

We are heartbroken by the recent loss of Dr. Janell Green Smith, a midwife and Black maternal health advocate who died due to childbirth complications while welcoming her first child.

Her passing is a painful reminder of the urgent work still needed to address racial disparities in maternal health, and why listening, learning, and advocating for safer outcomes for Black mothers and families matters so deeply.

Through education, awareness, and programs such as our Essex County Doula Program and Nurse-Family Partnership, we remain committed to supporting families before, during, and after pregnancy, every day.

Winter wellness begins with small habits that help families stay healthy throughout the season. Here are a few simple ways to care for yourself and your little ones:

1. Keep routines steady with regular meals and bedtimes.
2. Stay active indoors with walks, stretching, or movement games.
3. Choose nourishing foods like warm soups, fruits, and vegetables to build immunity.
4. Wash hands often to help prevent winter illnesses.
5. Find quiet moments to rest and reduce stress.

Small steps can make winter feel a little healthier and a little easier for everyone.

The holidays don’t pause the need for support and care.

Through the Prevention Resource Network (PRN), individuals continue to receive HIV and STI prevention services, education, testing referrals, and ongoing, home- and community-based support. PRN helps people stay connected to care and essential resources throughout the year.

Last weekend, Dr. Meg Fisher was honored with the Pediatrician Lifetime Achievement Award at the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 75th anniversary celebration in Jersey City!

It was a special night recognizing decades of progress in children’s health and the people behind it. As Chair of the CFHI Advisory Board and a Trustee for VNA Health Group, Dr. Fisher has generously shared her time, expertise, and leadership for many years, helping guide programs that support children and families across New Jersey.

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Fisher’s remarkable career and thankful for the perspective and commitment she continues to bring to CFHI and VNA Health Group.

December is National Safe Toys & Gifts Month, and with holiday shopping in full swing, it’s a good moment to think about choosing toys that keep little ones safe. When selecting gifts, look for sturdy materials, avoid small parts that could be a choking hazard for younger children, and opt for toys that encourage imagination and learning.

A few thoughtful choices can help make holiday playtime both fun and safe.
