Black maternal health in New Jersey remains a public health crisis. Despite growing awareness, Black women continue to face significantly higher risks during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and too many of these deaths are preventable.

Sahai Cole, Vice President of the Children & Family Health Institute, shares her perspective on why these disparities persist and what must change across healthcare systems to better protect mothers and families.

“If we are serious about reducing maternal deaths, we must move beyond concern and commit to change. Black mothers deserve care that listens, responds, and stays present after delivery. Their lives depend on it," said Sahai.

March marks Women’s History Month, recognizing the contributions and leadership of women in our communities.

At CFHI, women lead many of the programs that support families across Monmouth and Ocean counties. From maternal and child health initiatives to community-based services, their work helps ensure women and families have access to care, guidance, and resources close to home.

Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting members of the CFHI team and recognizing the important role they play in strengthening the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington of the New Jersey Department of Health recently visited Visiting Nurse Association Health Group's Prevention Resource Network (PRN) to meet with the team and learn more about their work in the community.

Through PRN, the Harm Reduction Center provides prevention, education, and supportive services at its fixed site, through mobile outreach, and via a 24/7 vending machine, helping individuals access care and reduce risk.

We thank the Commissioner for taking the time to tour the program and for the ongoing partnership supporting harm reduction efforts across New Jersey.

During Black History Month, we honor the strength and contributions of Black leaders and families, and we also recognize the urgent work that remains.

Black women in the U.S. are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. In our latest blog, Sahai Cole, Vice President of CFHI, shares why listening to families, strengthening postpartum care, and investing in community-based support are critical to improving outcomes.

“When care is responsive and continuous, outcomes can improve,” she shares.
