Why Am I Shedding So Much Hair?
Shedding excessive amounts of hair (called telogen effluvium) is different from balding. It’s often triggered by internal stressors such as illness, stress, or diet.
💉Basic Labs to Check for Hair Shedding:
✔️ CBC (Complete Blood Count): screens for anemia or chronic illness
✔️ Serum Ferritin: most sensitive test for iron deficiency (essential for hair health)
✔️ TSH ± Free T4: checks for thyroid imbalance
✔️ 25-hydroxy Vitamin D: low levels linked to shedding
👉 You don’t need expensive vitamin panels that may not be covered by insurance.
If your diet isn’t balanced, consider a multivitamin with Vitamin D, Iron, and Zinc.
🔎 If other symptoms like joint pain, muscle aches, weight changes, or fatigue are present, additional labs may be ordered to rule out autoimmune conditions. Hormonal testing (like for PCOS) is only needed if symptoms suggest a hormonal imbalance.
