Next steps are exciting and scary. I took the leap into this journey and have a number of new requirements to meet to be an approved consultant, which include working with 5 amazing EMDR trained therapists who are seeking to become EMDR certified. No one is saying a challenge will be easy, when challenged I ask- What choices do you have? What is in your control? What outcome do you want? Challenges will come and go but each challenge has an opportunity- to change, or grow, or shift gear, or re-attune.

Adoption doesn’t change genetics. Genetically 50% father and 50% mother, when you name call “ those people”, “ that woman”, “ s***m donor” etc and attribute behaviors you don’t like- not only are you putting the adoptee down. You also aren’t taking responsibility to attune to the complex needs of adoptees or your parenting practices. Accountability is needed nature did not give all the negative while parenting and nurture gave all the good. You can do better. Yes, these comment sting. Yes, as a provider I hear them about adoptees. If you say my mother is crazy and then bring me to therapy- aren’t you calling me crazy? I don’t treat crazy, I help people who’ve been wronged heal.

As a therapist I don’t want to only know who gets credit for creating something, I want to know where the ideas came from, everything is connected. In art it’s relatively easy to see how one artist’s work inspired another; in the psychotherapy world it’s not as easy to see the origins of modern modalities. Don’t let a name or two erase the practices where those modalities have roots. Can you think of other modalities with roots in older or indigenous practices?
