Join us in celebrating four first-time platelet donors, Kaitlyn, Jarrod, Sydney, and Bryant!

They all came out over the weekend to support their sister, who is currently battling an illness. Their donations are a beautiful example of how family and community come together when it matters most. Thank you all for being lifesavers. ❤️

This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognize the incredible impact women have on the lifesaving mission of blood donation.

Did you know that nearly 55% of blood donors in the United States are female? Every day, women across our communities roll up their sleeves to help ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients facing surgery, cancer treatments, trauma, and more.

Whether they’re donating themselves, encouraging friends and family to give, or volunteering at blood drives, women play a vital role in keeping the blood supply strong.

To all the women who give their time, compassion, and blood to help others, thank you for being lifesavers. ❤️

Mickey knows firsthand how powerful blood donations can be. After suffering second- and third-degree burns to 73% of his body in April 2021, Mickey relied on 35 units of blood throughout his months-long recovery.

“We’re very grateful for the heroes — people who donate blood," Mickey's wife MaryAnn shared. "Without blood, he wouldn’t be here.”

Thank you to every donor who steps up and continues to make lifesaving care possible. 🩸❤️

Help us rebuild the blood supply this week! 🩸

The recent storm significantly impacted blood collections across our region and led to a loss of over 3,000 donations. While the storm has passed, the need for blood never slows down, and hospitals are counting on us to replenish the supply quickly.

Like Councilmember Lincoln Restler knows, the best time to donate is now! Schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets at bit.ly/4qQjHtu.

Due to the winter storm and blizzard conditions, NJBS will be closing all donor centers and canceling all blood drives beginning at 12PM today through Monday to ensure the safety of our donors and staff.

Severe weather can significantly impact the blood supply, and donations are more critical than ever. If you were scheduled to donate or are eligible to give, we encourage you to reschedule an appointment for later next week as soon as it’s safe to travel.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood — no matter the weather.

Please schedule your next appointment at nybc.org/zipsearch.

In 2022, Vinny’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer. During his treatment, Vinny relied on more than 30 blood and platelet transfusions—each one playing a critical role in giving him the chance to keep fighting.

Today, Vinny is not just a survivor. He’s a devoted son and brother, a determined jui-jitsu enthusiast, and a powerful advocate for blood donation who proudly shares his story to help others. You may recognize Vinny from our recipient videos, where he reminds us about the power of each donation!

Patients like Vinny counted on generous donors every single day. If you’re eligible, schedule an appointment and help give someone else the chance to keep going.

🩸 What are platelets — and why are they so important?

Think of platelets as the firefighters of your bloodstream. When bleeding happens, they’re the first to respond and get things under control.

Patients facing cancer treatments, organ transplants, chronic illnesses, and bleeding disorders rely on platelet transfusions to survive.

But here’s the catch: Platelets must be used within 7 days.

That means hospitals need a constant supply from donors like you.

Our Story

New Jersey Blood Services is a division of New York Blood Center. Founded in 1964, the New York Blood Center Network (NYBC) is a nonprofit organization that is one of the largest independent, community-based blood centers in the world. NYBC, along with its partner organizations Community Blood Center of Kansas City, Missouri (CBC), Innovative Blood Resources (IBR), Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD), and Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC), collect approximately 4,000 units of blood products each day and serve local communities of more than 45 million people in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT), Mid Atlantic area (PA, DE, MD), the Kansas City metropolitan area, Minnesota, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Southern New England. NYBC and its partners also provide a wide array of transfusion-related medical services, including Comprehensive Cell Solutions, the National Center for Blood Group Genomics, the National Cord Blood Program, and the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute, which—among other milestones—developed the Hepatitis B vaccine and a patented solvent detergent plasma process innovating blood-purification technology worldwide.
