A Pioneer. A Mentor. A Pillar of Athletic Training.

Dr. Marsha Grant-Ford helped shape the profession long before representation in athletic training leadership was common.

As the first certified Black female athletic trainer in the nation, her impact extends far beyond titles, influencing generations of clinicians through mentorship, leadership, and advocacy.

Her legacy reminds us that progress is built by those willing to lead when pathways do not yet exist.

This Black History Month, NYSATA proudly honors Dr. Grant-Ford’s enduring contributions to athletic training and the countless professionals inspired by her example.

Because leadership leaves a legacy.

Excellence was always present 🫶. Recognition is catching up...

Behind every profession are pioneers whose stories weren’t always told.

BHM2026: Today and everyday we focus on: Excellence in Care ❤️💛💚 🖤

ATs reflect on how history, identity, & power shape the care we provide today.

These books remind us that culturally responsive care is not extra; it is essential to trust, healing, & ethical practice in sports medicine 🙌

🧠 Your brain is your most important asset. Protect it.

Too often, athletes try to “tough it out” after a head injury. But ignoring symptoms can delay recovery and put long-term health at risk ❌

If something feels off after a hit, fall, or collision:

✔️ Speak up
✔️ Get evaluated
✔️ See your athletic trainer immediately

Early care leads to safer recovery and a faster return to the classroom, the field, and the activities athletes love.

As Athletic Trainer Erica Marcano, MS, ATC reminds us:
Head injuries must be taken seriously.

Trust athletic trainers with concussion recovery.

Today's athletes don't just compete in school sports, they play year-round across multiple teams, clubs, and leagues 🏆

And when head or impact injuries happen outside the school setting, concussion symptoms can be missed or delayed. 🧠

That's why recognizing the signs and symptoms of concussion early is critical to getting athletes the care they need.

When athletic trainers are present at club and tournament events, they become the first line of defense, identifying injuries, guiding safe removal from play, and helping athletes begin the right path to recovery.

Protect the athlete. Protect the brain. Protect the future. 🙏
