Bromance of a class this morning. Super hot, 120+ (120 is as high as my thermometer goes.) We don't usually get it quite that hot, but these guys were game and maintained awesome energy throughout. Love my little Homer Hot Yoga community!

It's a bit of a juggle running Homer Hot Yoga and Divinitea, but no matter how dark and cold it gets (and this has been, by far, the coldest winter since I've moved here), I never tire of coming to this gorgeous yurt and engaging in the ritual of starting the fire. I think of all the little sparks of fire starting in my life, the warmth of fires that are at full flame...and the fires that are starting to fade and burn out. It is going to be a pretty full Homer yoga class this morning, with six of us facing each other and doing yoga in the round. Celebrating each other's new milestones, and encouraging and supporting each other where we may feel weak or worn out. It's weird to be so grateful that I broke my back almost 30 years ago...but if I hadn't, I wouldn't be sitting in this gorgeous yurt this morning, pondering the power of spiritual fire and looking forward to spending time with this great yoga community.

Jay had fun picking out all the music in pound class...and then a pretty full house for hot yoga.

Homer Hot Yoga Owner, Karalee

I broke my back 25 years ago in a snow skiing accident. It wasn’t a bad break. I got up and walked away…but after giving birth to two children, and carrying babies and car seats, my back began to quickly deteriorate. I was throwing it out every other week, ending up having to crawl to the bathroom and feeling unable to care for my children.

A concerned friend told me that I should try a form of hot yoga available in Los Angeles, where I lived, called Bikram Yoga. I made it to Bikram’s studio, and this colorful character proceeded to yell at me throughout the 90 minute class. It was overwhelming, and exhausting, but when I left, my back felt a little better. I ended up training under Bikram Choudhury for several years, during which time my back problems went into remission completely.

I have done Bikram yoga on and off over the last 20 years at several different studios. And each time I stop, my back problems return. Upon moving to Homer, Alaska, it was one of the only things I missed about living in Los Angeles.

It is my pleasure to now offer these healing, transformative classes in a charming yurt, near Bishop’s Beach that is heated with a wood stove.
