Please join us in welcoming Ian Lawrence, MD to the SPH Hospitalist team! Hospitalists care for patients during their hospital stay from admission through discharge, ensuring seamless, attentive care. Dr. Lawrence specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics, allowing him to treat both adults and children in the inpatient setting.

A graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, he was drawn to Homer for its strong healthcare community and incredible quality of life. Formerly a teacher and youth coach in California, Dr. Lawrence looks forward to joining our close-knit community and exploring the great outdoors. Welcome, Dr. Lawrence!

Congratulations to Karen Northrop, PT, DPT, OCS, for receiving the Service Award from the Alaska Physical Therapy Association!

A Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist for 20 years, Karen continues to set the bar for clinical excellence. With support from APTA Alaska, she launched Homer’s first pro bono physical therapy clinic in 2025, a true reflection of her commitment to accessible, equitable care.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to learn more about how we can all take steps to prevent or better manage diabetes. Even if you don’t have diabetes, understanding your blood sugar health is an important part of staying well.

Simple steps for everyone:
🥦 Choose whole foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins.
🚶 Move your body daily. Aim for 30 minutes of activity most days — even a brisk walk helps!
💧 Drink water instead of sugary beverages.
😴 Get enough sleep and manage stress — both affect blood sugar balance.
🧪Ask about your A1C test. This routine blood test shows your average blood sugar level over the past few months and can help identify prediabetes early.

Take charge of your health this month! Ask your healthcare provider for a screening or an A1C test at your next appointment!

Meeting Announcement - KPB’s South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area board is an elected board that provides public recommendation on capital spending of tax dollars and scope of services for South Peninsula Hospital. They meet the second Thursday of each month at 6:30pm in the hospital’s conference room and on zoom. This month’s meeting is tonight, Thursday, November 13th at 6:30pm. Earlier this month, South Peninsula Hospital hosted the first of two events to share plans on how the hospital is preparing to meet the healthcare needs of the community. The second conversation in this series is this evening, November 12th from 5-7pm at the Anchor Point Senior Center (72750 Milo Fritz Avenue). Doors open at 4:45pm.

Curious about what your Rotary Health Fair low-cost blood test results mean? This upcoming Wednesday at 5:30 pm, we invite you to join Emma Mayfield, DO, Homer Medical Center, for "Know Your Numbers", an informative session that breaks down the meaning behind common blood tests and what high or low results may indicate.

As always, free soup & bread will be offered, and after Dr. Mayfield's talk, we'll have an hour of vinyasa yoga led by Maggie Kao.
