📣 In October 2020, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force changed their screening recommendations for colore**al cancer (CRC) starting at age 45. This recommendation aligned with recommendations from the American Cancer Society.

📣In March 2021 The American College of Gastroenterology change their guidelines.

📜 An abstract published during last weeks SAGES conference in Las Vegas reports:

😳 Starting colonoscopy at age 50 as previous guidelines recommended would result in an increase in incidence of young-onset CRC by 20% to 30% by 2027 🥵

🧑‍💻Modeler analyses based on 56,000 cases of CRC among adults ages 45 to 50 from 2004 to 2017

🛑Projected 11.4% increase in colon cancer by 2022 (n=3,249, 95% CI 3,072-3,425) and a 21.2% increase in incidence by 2027 (n=3,535, 95% CI 3,354-3,716)

🛑Also 11.6% increase in re**al cancer by 2022 (n=1,315, 95% CI 1,196-1,434) and a 28.6% increase in incidence (n=1,451, 95% CI 1,328-1,574) by 2027

💩 Chronic constipation (CC) is a common gastrointestinal (GI) disorder with a global population prevalence of 7%–14%

🩺 Accounts for almost 4 million outpatient visits per year

▶️ According to the Rome IV criteria, the spectrum of CC disorders includes both functional constipation (FC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C)

▶️ Symptoms include reduced stool frequency, hard stool consistency, straining, or a sensation of incomplete evacuation, with or without significant abdominal symptoms such as pain and bloating

Psyllium and prunes are proven treatments for chronic constipation (CC). Asian studies suggest that kiwifruit 🥝may also benefit CC symptoms.

✔️Kikifruit is fiber rich containing 3 to 4g of fiber
✔️Rich in vitamin C 🍊
✔️Low FODMAP – causing less bloating 💨
✔️Contains low amount of sugar, Compared other high fiber foods
✔️Contains a digestive enzyme called actinidin – acts as a laxative in some way

In a US study, 79 patients with CC were randomized to 3 natural treatments

1️⃣Green kiwifruit (2/d), 2️⃣ prunes (100 g/d), or 3️⃣ psyllium (12 g/d) for 4 weeks

There was a significant increase in weekly complete spontaneous bowel movement with all 3 treatments (P ≤ 0.003)

💩Stool consistency significantly improved with kiwifruit (P = 0.01) and prunes (P = 0.049)
💩Straining significantly improved with kiwifruit (P = 0.003), prunes (P < 0.001), and psyllium (P = 0.04)
😃Patients randomized to the kiwifruit group reported significant improvement in bloating scores (P = 0.02)

June 10 is International NASH Day! ⚕️

——————————————————————

•Owed to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes there is an alarming increase in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Happy 4th of July everyone! 2 key pieces of advice:
1️⃣ wear a mask to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 🦠
2️⃣chew your food!

This holiday is notorious in the 💩 on-call world for Food impactions. These occurs when food, often meat, chicken, 🌭 ( hint hint 😉 4th of July bbq 🇺🇸) becomes stuck in your esophagus.
Food impaction can occur if your esophagus does not function normally or do not chew your food completely! So chew your food and drink lots of water 💦 💗👍🇺🇸

At the beginning of 2020 I was “happy” living life as usual. I was in my comfortable job. A job I landed after graduating from fellowship. I worked light to moderate hours, while getting paid well 🤑. Something that’s hard to come by in a mayor city nowadays for doctors. But If I am being honest, the daily routine was not very exciting or personally challenging.

Oh little did I know what this year had in store! - side 📝 I think all of humanity is in the same boat about 2020. 🦠

Fast forward to early March, the COVID pandemic was on, full speed. Social distancing and 😷 masks became the new normal. Fast forward to early April, my cushie job told me they could “no longer guarantee a salary given the current financial climate”(more there but 🤫). So I decided to do something that had already crossed my mind but was too comfortable and even afraid to do...

1️⃣ I left my job, and 2️⃣ in June I started my own business! 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼

What a rollercoaster experience it has been...from selling our old home, to buying a new one closer to work (work in progress, almost there). To living at my parent’s through the transition. To a 2nd unsuccessful IVF cycle (no pitie party please 🤗 radical acceptance). To starting at a new hospital system. To meeting sooooo many new people. To learning the business side of medicine and 2 new EMRs. To carrying for those affected by this terrible pandemic - new hospital is a hotspot 😱. To feeling scared and anxious but so proud of myself💪🏼. To feeling the most 💗ed I have felt by the unconditional support of my husband, friends, and family. All the while, feeling this uncontainable excitement about life and what the future holds.

I don’t have it all figured out but I am ok with that. I have faith. Whatever you have been feeling in your you wanna do but have been too afraid to do....DO IT. Trust that you are not alone... 🙏 📸 of the new sign at the new hospital ✔️ #2020

🌾 Celiac’s disease (CD) can present with diarrhea, weight loss, bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and also non-gastrointestinal abnormalities (e.g., abnormal liver function tests, iron deficiency anemia, bone disease, skin disorders, etc) ✅ Some individuals with celiac disease may have no symptoms at all. ✅The treatment for CD is primarily a gluten-free diet (GFD), which requires significant patient education, motivation, and follow-up ✅Non-responsive CD occurs frequently, particularly in those diagnosed in adulthood ✅Persistent or recurring symptoms should lead to a review of the patient's original diagnosis to exclude alternative diagnoses, a review of the GFD to ensure there is no obvious gluten contamination, and serologic testing to confirm adherence with the GFD ✅Evaluation for disorders associated with CD that could cause persistent symptoms, such as microscopic colitis, pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, and complications of CD such as enteropathy-associated lymphoma or refractory celiac disease, should be entertained

Happy Saturday ‼️ Let’s talk about saturated fats 👩🏼‍⚕️

🔍 Saturated fats occur naturally in many foods – primarily meat and dairy products. A diet rich in saturated and trans fat has been linked to high cholesterol, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome. 🥓🍔🍟🥛🍕🧈

💟 The AHA recommends only 5 to 6% of your calories come from saturated fats when consuming 2,000 calories/d

👎 Examples of foods with saturated fat are
* fatty beef
* lamb
* pork
* poultry with skin
* beef fat (tallow)
* lard and cream
* butter
* cheese
* other dairy products made from whole or reduced-fat (2%) milk
* many baked goods and fried foods
* some plant-based oils, such as palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil (these do not contain cholesterol)

👍 alternatives to replace saturated fats
* fruits and vegetables
* whole grains
* low-fat dairy products ( examples of low fat cheeses include mozzarella, feta, cottage cheese or reduced-fat cheeses – will provide less sat fat)
* poultry
* fish
* nuts
* Limit red meat and choose lean meats

Processed foods are cheap which makes them widely available in western diet. They are extremely tasteful but mostly from artificial flavors and heavy processing. After so many years of consuming these types of foods, it’s hard to make a change. Our minds are programmed to reach for these flavors and other things do not interest us. But knowledge and awareness are the first steps in bringing about change. Let’s start making the right choices. Let’s be mindful in choosing what we put into our body. Trust me, I say this to myself as much as I say it anyone. 🙋🏼‍♀️guilty 💯 ✅ it’s hard but it can be done

Drop a 💯 if you agree!
