It’s normal for children and young people to feel worried or anxious at the moment. They've experienced sudden changes in their lives and routines and living with lots of uncertainty from day to day. For some young people, the coronavirus pandemic may also worsen or trigger anxieties they were already struggling with.

Here are 5 things you can do to support your child during this pandemic:

Talk to them about what’s going on. Find out how they’re feeling and what they’re thinking about, let them know it’s okay to feel scared or unsure, and try to answer their questions and reassure them in an age appropriate manner. Remember, you do not need to know all the answers, but talking things through can help them feel calmer.
Help them to reflect on how they’re feeling and encourage them to think about the things they can do to make them feel safer and less worried.
Reassure them that this will pass, you’re there for them, and you will get through this together.
Spend time doing a positive activity with your child (such as reading, playing, painting or cooking) to help reassure them and reduce their anxiety. This is also a great way of providing a space for them to talk through their concerns, without having a ‘big chat’.
Keep as many regular routines as possible, so that your child feels safe and that things are stable.

Life transitions are usually life changing events that cause us to re-examine our present sense of being. They can be predictable, such as children leaving the home or marriage but they can often be unpredictable, such as a move, an accident or a loss. Positive life transitions CAN lead to stress and depression. This young lady received a promotion at work which led her feeling overworked and unsupported. The stress of her role and responsibilities caused her to experience low self esteem, self doubt, depression and ultimately led her to take her own life. Many people would have associated a promotion as a positive thing. Stressors come in many forms, they can be positive or negative. An individual can very well feel depressed among other things when having to deal or faced with a positive life transition.

Leona Goddard, 35, worked 12-hour shifts at Prestwich Hospital in Manchester and felt burdened with unpredictable work hours and extra responsibilities
