Sure, we all know the story of St. Patrick and how he dramatically drove all the snakes out of Ireland but have you ever heard of his lesser known second cousin St. Josh - patron saint of trail running? If not, you’re in luck cause tonight and every Tuesday at Tuesday Night Trails we celebrate the spirit of St. Josh by walking and running the trails .

Just show up at 5:45pm and by 6pm you’ll experience the St. Josh tradition of sweating with strangers that’s brought people closer (albeit with some trepidation) over a millennia.

You can feel the electricity in the air! FINALLY, the wait is over; our time has come. If, (by some weird fluke,) you’re unaware what I’m referring to, TONIGHT IS OPENING NIGHT for Tuesday Night Trails !! Yes, the collective sigh of relief you’ve heard is for real. And while there many great reasons to show up tonight at TNT; I’d like to share my top 5:

• 6 GROUPS! - Yes, we have a walking group, a beginner trail runner group and 4 different pace groups; all with leaders and sweepers.

• NEW SPONSORS! - Rounding out the list of sponsors this year are: Birmingham Ultra Trail Society (BUTS,) Art of Running, Ponte Therapeutic Massage, Ponte Guided Adventures and NOW for 2026 we have everyone’s favorite Birmingham running institution, Trak Shak!

Tuesday Night Trails is baaaack!
In just three weeks on Tuesday, March 10th, at Red Mountain Park!

WHAT TIME? Gather at 5:45 pm, start at 6 p.m. Every Tuesday through September.

HOW LONG? We run and/or walk for one hour.

HOW FAST? We offer FIVE different run pace group options (even one just for beginners) plus a walking group.

BUT WHAT IF I DONT KNOW THE TRAILS? Each group has a leader and sweeper, so even if you have never been on the Red Mtn trails, we’ll make sure you feel at home!

AND WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW ANYONE? We want to meet you! Last year we had over 100 people for our opening night, and we look forward to sharing our love of the trails with everyone again this year.

OUR HISTORY: This is the oldest weekly organized trail run in Birmingham! Beginning in 2012 when Red Mountain Park opened. Birmingham Ultra Trail Society has been an integral part of these runs since the beginning and officially became a sponsor in 2015.

Since then, we’ve added Ponte Therapeutic Massage, Ponte Guided Adventures, and ART of Running as sponsors. And Red Mountain Park is now part of Jefferson County Greenways.

CH-CH-CH CHANGES: We want to thank Alabama Outdoors for their years of sponsorship! And although they are unable to continue this in 2026, we are excited to announce that The Trak Shak will be joining forces with TNT this year! Trak Shak has been an iconic supporter of all things Birmingham running for over three decades, and we are very happy to have them on board!

The annual Railway Marathon/Half Marathon/10K/5K/50K continues to grow! This race just gets better every year and I love being a part of it.
Huge shout out to (James Graham) for putting on an event that was both great fun for runners of all distances and a touching tribute honoring Christina Chambers. (And thank you to his kids for their assistance throughout the day.)
Also, a big thank you to the City of Fultondale whose Parks & Recreation department is always on top of everything! And of course Jeremey Davis and the whole team for making it all work right. They’re fantastic!!

It’s a rare treat in Birmingham, AL to get to run a race with actual temps in the teens and ‘glitter flakes’ landing about. It’s even rarer to get to MC one. I was the lucky guy who got that opportunity today.
As always, Adams Heart did not disappoint!! Huge shoutout to and the beastly volunteers who made it happen under ‘somewhat chilly and breezy’ conditions. And a warm and sincere CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who toed the line today. You really are the champions in my book!

If your Thanksgiving dinner was anything like mine, you probably had everyone go around the table and say what they were most thankful for prior to diving face first into turkey, stuffing and some casserole of unknown origin. And likely (as was the case at my house,) pretty much everyone gushed openly about how thankful they were for Ponte Therapeutic Massage. To be honest, I totally see through their subterfuge and I’m betting you do too. It’s just their way of hinting that what they REALLY want for Christmas or Chanukah is a gift certificate for a massage at PTM. And who could blame them? They come in 30, 60, 90 or 120 minute sessions and they’re super easy to wrap. There are even eCertificates for those of you who favor gift giving via email over pesky face to face interactions.

For those of you who live in Birmingham and own a metal detector…One of my dearest clients has lost a small piece of jewelry that is precious to her. It was her deceased brother’s baby ring that she wore as a charm on her necklace and it’s likely that it may have fallen off in our parking lot as she was walking to her car. Several of us have slowly walked up and down her trajectory multiple times however, you can see that my lot is a combination of dirt, gravel and broken pieces of asphalt so if you want to give it a try, we would all welcome it. They are offering a $500 reward to the person who finds it.

If you’r interested, please message me privately. It’s important for me and my landlord to know who’s on the property.

So…I was hanging out in AZ for a few days before my clients arrived for our annual Grand Canyon trip and decided to do some scouting in an place I’d never been before - Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Located between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT, this massive wilderness area has some of the most stunning rock formations I’ve ever seen anywhere. I was only able to visit two parts - White Pocket and Paria Plateau. Due to a highly uncommon combination of geologic events, these solid rock landscapes are nothing short of stunning! The pictures say it better than I can. And you don’t have to be in ultra shape to enjoy them. This place is like a playground where you can easily walk right up to and even to the top of your favorite formations. The difficult part is getting there. It’s so remote, it takes about 90 minutes of sand road four wheel driving before you arrive. I was fortunate to find a skillful and knowledgeable guide out of Kanab by the name of Ben Davis with Tours to take me there.
All I can say is…TOTALLY WORTH IT!
(And then otw back to Flagstaff, I drove right past Horseshoe Bend and had to pull over to see it again and snap a pic.)

Yes, it’s unimaginably distressing, but true. Tonight is the last Tuesday Night Trails for 2024. The good news is that you have ONE MORE CHANCE to run and walk with strangers of dubious aroma and enjoy the splendor (and cooler temperatures) of the natural beauty that’s right in our own backyard. AND as an extra bonus there will be an after party on the porch of Overtime Grill&Bar where we’ll be giving away AMAZING PRIZES from , Ponte Therapeutic Massage, Birmingam Ultra Trail Society, , , Trak Shak, Ponte Guided Adventures, and many more!!!
We’ll even have a free gear swap so bring any lightly used hiking/running/camping gear that you haven’t used since mix tapes were a thing and leave it for someone who might be able to use it. You just might find something for yourself.
Just show up at 5:45pm for a 6pm start to walk or run and then meet us at Overtime at 7pm ish after. Your soul will thank you.

If you’ve noticed a heightened level of tension in the air, it’s not your imagination. What you’re feeling is actually due to the collective angst that occurs this time every year when all people everywhere become painfully aware that Tuesday Night Trails is coming to its seasonal end. That’s right, we only have two opportunities left to walk and run in the woods with sweaty strangers before we revert to spending our Tuesday nights sobbing uncontrollably as we pine for spring.
As distressing as this may be, there IS a sliver lining. Next week on September 16th - after the run - we’ll have our annual year end party at Overtime Grill & Bar. This is always a well attended extravaganza of food, fun and some pretty cool door prizes. So mark your calendars and be sure to come by tonight at 5:45pm for a little practice with and me. We run or walk from 6pm-7pm and then head to Overtime for food and drink. Think of it as a training run for the big night.
