MEET YOUR WALKCHAIR HOST: JAY

Everyone, meet Jay! Jay is a resident of Daphne Alabama! Jay has quite the story to share. A former paramedic and fireman, Jay was your average & healthy adult.

In December of 2020 Jay began experiencing cramping and weakness within his hands. It would then progress to his legs and arms. Over the course of 10 days, his condition would rapidly set in. At first he was diagnosed with GBS. Then he would get better with treatment and then decline again. After repeated episodes of this, he would seek further treatment and would be misguided again with CIPD. After being transferred from his local hospital to the University of Alabama, Birmingham hospital, he would then be correctly diagnosed with MMN (Multifocal Muscular Neuropathy). This condition is not only rare but also very hard to diagnose.

After several trial and error on treatments and solutions, doctors would later find the perfect medicine and treatment to help. He then spent 90 days in inpatient rehab. With weekly plasma transfusions and physical therapy he would began to reverse his paralysis to regain a sense of normalcy back within his life. You can read more on his story here: https://www.uabmedicine.org/news/spain-rehab-center-ambassador-of-hope-uses-positive-thinking-to-inspire-others/?uab_newsch=org_main #.YcSs-l5YsaY.facebook

What is your goal with this event? My goal is to assist other patients and their caregivers by providing the resources to help them live their best life possible . I hope by all of us sharing our stories we can inspire hope for the future.

Former Quadriplegic & MMN patient since 2020

MEET YOUR WALKCHAIR HOST: Kaleigh Watts
Pictures 1-3 are during GBS, including prom with a walker. picture 4 is life now, 5 years later.

Hi! My name is Kaleigh! I am 22 now but at the age of 17, I unfortunately ended up with GBS (Guillain Barre Syndrome). Before GBS, I was your typical happy & healthy teenager! At the time, I was a competitive cheerleader who enjoyed an everyday active life. However on Feb. 27th, 2019 my life changed forever as the onset of GBS began. With the onset of GBS I began with slow ascending paralysis. This eventually went through my body and I lost all fine motor skills. As the condition attacks your body, it attacks your neurological & nervous system.

Originally I was misdiagnosed with a viral infection. This misdiagnosis led to further loss of my hands, my walking, my speech, and many more things. Eventually over that week I got to where the paralysis began spreading & I lost all fine motor skills, even walking, feeding myself and some speech issues. I would end up spending 2.5 months at the Medical University of South Carolina where after tests were ran I would be diagnosed with GBS, a week into my onset. Following the diagnosis I would then be treated with plasma transfusions, steroids, and many months of PT and OT to regain my normal life back. I am very blessed to be able to regain such a normal life back

After GBS and regain a mostly normal life back. I would attend college and then I would move from SC to AL. Upon my move I realized the need for awareness, connection and community for the many people in central Alabama and surrounding areas that suffer from GBS, CIPD & MMN.

What is your goal for this event? My goal for this event is to bring more awareness to GBS, CIPD & MMN for patients and their communities. I want to bring more awareness and more funding to help with further research.

Iron city, meets iron patients (& community)! Birmingham, we are proud to bring some of the strongest people, with the strongest medical stories together, in our city! GBS (Guillian-Barre Syndrome), CIPD (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy), and MMN (Multifocal Motor Neuropathy).

What: Walk and Roll is brought to you by the GBS/CIPD Foundation! The GBS/CIPD foundation states it best with the folllowing description of the event. “The Walk & Roll was created for friends, families, and volunteers to participate in a fun and proactive way to raise awareness, show support, make memories, and build a local network of communities around the world.” (https://p2p.onecause.com/walkandroll)

Who: While our hope is bring the GBS, CIPD, & MMN community together so they can share experiences and swap encouragement… our event is for EVERYONE! “Invite your friends, family, neighbors, and community to join our commitment to support those touched by GBS, CIDP, or MMN and variants.” (https://p2p.onecause.com/walkandroll)

Why: You may be thinking, “if there’s a foundation or other walks, what makes this one special?” The answer is… this one is for your community! All awareness and help reaches and takes part within your community. “All money raised from Walk & Roll events goes towards research grants that the Foundation will award to leading experts in the field of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), and related syndromes such as Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN), and variants.
Funds raised through our walk program will help to support our research initiatives including:
* Diagnosis – Developing methods to more rapidly diagnose GBS, CIDP, and its variants, such as MMN.
* Treatments – Developing more effective treatments to limit disease progression, prevent complications, and reduce long-term adversities.
* Biomarkers – Identifying potential disease activity biomarkers by screening for proteins related to the nervous system and inflammation. “ (https://p2p.onecause.com/walkandroll)
