Vulcan Speech Group

Vulcan Speech Group Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology Services We are licensed speech-language pathologists working in a private practice in Birmingham, AL.

We evaluate and treat children (and some adults) who have difficulty communicating and/or eating. That means we can work with patients in a variety of areas including:

• Articulation-the way we use the sounds in words
• Phonology- patterns of speech-sound development
• Apraxia- motor planning difficulties when producing speech
• Fluency- stuttering
• Voice- hoarseness, breathiness, nasality issues, etc.
• Receptive language- what people understand of the language they hear
• Expressive language- using language to communicate effectively
• Pragmatic language- social communication
• Oral-motor- muscle coordination of the facial muscles required for speech
• Swallowing/feeding disorders- trouble with the muscle strength/coordination to chew and swallow or sensory aversions to foods/diet progression

Children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, and a variety of other diagnoses have a higher risk of having delays in many of these areas. So, if you have concerns that you, your child, or another family member may be struggling with speech or language development, please give us a call! We would love to do a free consultation or screening! Visit our website at www.vulcanspeech.com for more info!

❤️💚 The holidays are upon us! This time of year, while exciting, can also be daunting to those with special needs children. Some parents may choose to opt out of events or be stressed trying to make sure their child has an enjoyable time. Below are some things I have found useful, through plenty of trial and error, to help navigate the holidays with a special needs child.

1. Have a game plan.
2. Forewarned is fore-armed.
3. Come prepared.
4. Communicate with your child about what is going to happen.

If you’ve been around VSG for long, there’s a good chance you’ve either met Mrs. Allyson or she has helped with your child’s care behind the scenes in some way. She is a wealth of clinical knowledge, a source of constant entertainment in our office, and we are so thankful she’s been with VSG from the start. Please help us wish her a happy birthday today!

Today we celebrate International Stuttering Awareness Day. A reminder that every voice deserves to be heard and every word deserves to be spoken with confidence. 💙

Stuttering is just one part of how someone communicates. It doesn’t define their intelligence, personality, or potential. Let’s listen with patience, speak with kindness, and celebrate the courage it takes to share your voice.
