Five high school students from Forest City Regional School District received Certificates of Achievement from the Northern Tier Industry & Educational Consortium (NTIEC) today. They spent the last seven weeks in various departments at Wayne Memorial Hospital (WMH) learning real-time work in the healthcare system. The externship provides students interested in healthcare careers with opportunities to experience day to day operations in a medical facility. NTIEC partners with area schools, businesses, and organizations to better prepare students to make informed career decisions. WMH hosts similar programs with Wayne Highlands and Wallenpaupack Area School Districts.

Jeff Franco, RT, is WMH’s October Employee of the Month. Jeff works in the Respiratory Department and has been with Wayne Memorial for over 15 years. He was nominated by Amanda LaFave, RN, who said Jeff is “an asset to Wayne Memorial Hospital.” She went on to say that Jeff “demonstrates a strong work ethic, going above and beyond and exceeds expectations.” Department Manager Matt McFarland, RT, wholeheartedly agrees, “Jeff is truly a master of his craft…a leader in our respiratory department.” In their additional comments both described Jeff as “positive” numerous times. CEO Jim Pettinato agreed and presented Jeff with a plaque, a monetary award, and a gift card. He was joined by several administrators and coworkers from the Respiratory Department. Congratulations Jeff and thank you! He is now eligible for Employee of the Year 2025.

While the majority of Wayne Memorial Hospital (WMH) employees left for the weekend last Friday, Virginia Munger, RN headed off for the weekend of her life! That’s right, after 51 years in nursing Ginger hung up her scrubs for the last time. The perioperative staff bid Ginger a fond farewell on her last day at WMH, December 5th with a gathering of coworkers which included cake and gifts.
She joined WMH after 31 years at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale and continued nursing for an additional 14 years. Her dedication and compassion will be greatly missed. Congratulations Ginger, happy retirement. Enjoy!

Pearl Harbor Remembered...The annual wreath laying ceremony was held at Wayne Memorial Hospital (WMH) Friday morning in recognition of Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th and to honor the heroic members of our armed forces who served that fateful day 84 years ago. Veterans from VFW Post 531, American Legion Post 254, and members of the WMH administration and staff attended the solemn ceremony. Army veteran and WMH Chief of Medical Staff Dr. Sean McVeigh, FCCP, FACP, led the ceremony followed by an opening statement by Hugh Rechner, a former U.S. Army pilot who served two tours in the Vietnam War and past chairman of the WMH Board of Trustees.
With immense respect, the program also included a summary account of the horrific event in 1941 by Reverend Dale Pepper VFW Post 531 and Jim Carbone American Legion Post 254, the Pledge of Allegiance, a memorial prayer. The observance ended with the wreath placement at the hospital’s original plaque dedicated to 55 local soldiers who served in World War I, and the playing of Taps by local bugler Doug Wyllie.
One of the darkest days in U.S. history, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was called by President Franklin D. Roosevelt “a date which will live in infamy.” The surprise attack by the Japanese claimed approximately 2,400 lives and marked the official entry of the U.S. into World War II.
